Designation
n Pigeon Telephone Company, based in Pigeon, has recently been designated as an Eligible Telecommunications Carrier to subscribers in the company's service area, including Pigeon, Sand Point, Twining, Turner, Alba and Lakes of the North. The ETC designation by the Michigan Public Service Commission is part of the national universal service initiative, with a goal of providing all Michigan citizens access to essential telecommunications services.
Personnel
n Mike Skop has joined Team Elmer's as a project manager. He will be servicing clients in northern Michigan for excavation, site development and earthwork. Skop, who has 30 years experience, previously served as an engineer/superintendent for a northern Michigan asphalt company.
n David Dewey has joined Wojan Window & Door Corporation as senior engineer, based at the company's Charelvoix headquarters. Rick Pagano has joined Wojan as its new National Sales Manager, operating out of Chicago. Also new to the Wojan sales force is Mario Tarquinio, whose territory includes Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland and the District of Columbia. Ralph Doan has been promoted to quality control manager at the Charlevoix plant. Patrick Bubin was promoted to vice president Marketing & Sales, from the position of marketing director, working in Charlevoix.
n Mary Margaret Hornbaker was elected to the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity of Michigan. She is the executive director at Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity in Petoskey, where she's worked for nine years.
New service
n SCORE, counselors to America's small businesses in Traverse City and northern Michigan, has established of a new drop-in counseling service for small business operators and would-be entrepreneurs. Counselors will be available each Friday from 9 a.m. to noon at the offices of the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce. Counseling by appointment will also continue; make an appointment at www.UpNorthSCORE.com, or by calling (231) 947-5075 or (888) 796-4913.
Training
n Richard Olson, a water specialist at Owens Soft Water, Inc., has successfully completed the sales training course Kinetico University Delivering On Success (KUDOS). Owens is the authorized Kinetico dealer in northern Michigan.
Recognition
n For the third year in a row, Wojan Window & Door Corp., based in Charlevoix, has earned a position in the Inc. 5000. The company received a ranking of 2,346 by "Inc." magazine as part of the publication's 2009 annual list of the fastest-growing privately held companies in America.
n Michigan-based Art Van Furniture captured national recognition as the Retailer of the Year at the 13th Annual FurnitureToday Leadership Conference held last week in Naples, Fla. The award was given both in recognition of the company's 50th anniversary and the leadership and success of the company on the national level. The chain includes a store in Traverse City.
n Victor International's Bay Harbor Resort in Petoskey was named Best Development USA in the CNBC International Property Awards. The company also received a Best Marina Development Award in the competition for its North Sound Yacht Club in the British Virgin Islands.

Feds fail to use land for solar power
An Associated Press examination of U.S. Bureau of Land Management records and interviews with agency officials shows that the BLM operated a first-come, first-served leasing system that quickly overwhelmed its small staff and enabled companies, regardless of solar-industry experience, to squat on land without any real plans to develop it.

No Michigan state fair this year
The Michigan State Fair had been a state tradition for 160 years and held at Eight Mile and Woodward, within Detroit city limits, since 1905. But the fair had been running deficits and needed $360,000 from the state in 2008 to cover losses. Fewer than 220,000 people passed through last year. At its peak in 1966, the fair drew 1 million.
