Deal in the works for Sugar Loaf Ski Resort

CEDAR — A deal is pending for the long-shuttered Sugar Loaf Resort property in Leelanau County.

Attorneys for resort owner Kate Wickstrom and a potential buyer of the closed ski resort confirmed Tuesday they're finalizing a purchase agreement for the property, although they withheld the name of the would-be buyer.

"We've entertained offers from several parties," said Joseph Quandt, Wickstrom's attorney. "This individual appeared to us to have the best ability to make something happen out there."

Sugar Loaf, which closed in March 2000 after several years of financial difficulties, was purchased by Wickstrom in March of 2005. Wickstrom had hoped to have the ski facilities at least partially operating last season, and in April of 2006 unveiled plans for a $50 million redevelopment plan focusing on "extreme" sports like snowboarding. The work included an overhaul of the main lodge building, new residential development and a recreational vehicle campground.

Cleveland Township officials approved zoning changes for the proposal last year, but the project never materialized.

Attorney Robert Parker of Traverse City, who represents the buyer, also confirmed the proposed deal but wouldn't immediately identify the party, who Parker said is "very much committed to re-opening the ski hill."
