'Business camp' is slated for Thursday

TRAVERSE CITY -- A free "Business Camp" to help area residents with job seeking, interview and networking skills is set for Thursday.

The event is from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Northwestern Michigan College's University Center off Cass Road. Presentations are aimed at helping participants seek and land employment in the area.

Pre-registration is requested and available at the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce Web site at www.tcchamber.org.

Cherryland Electric has saving program

GRAWN -- Cherryland Electric Cooperative launched a new energy saving program for residential and commercial customers as part of the "Michigan Saves" initiative through the state Public Service Commission.

The program helps utility customers secure financing and construction help to make energy- efficient improvements at homes or businesses. Local partners with Cherryland are Members Credit Union and Brown Lumber Co.

Cherryland General Manager Tony Anderson said the program is the first of its kind in Michigan.

"This program combines help for our members along with economic development for the Grand Traverse area...we're hopeful people will take advantage of it right away," Anderson said.

Traverse Bay EDC hosts annual meeting

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse Bay Economic Development Corp. will host its annual meeting on March 18 starting at 3:30 p.m. at the Hagerty Center in Traverse City.

The event will include a keynote address from Doug Rothwell, president and CEO of Business Leaders for Michigan. It will also include an overview of EDC's activities in 2009, which included helping to spur more than $78 million in public and private investment in the area and creation or retention of more than 800 local jobs.

The Traverse Bay EDC is the economic development arm of the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce.

Sustainable energy workshop is set

TRAVERSE CITY -- A workshop on demand-side energy management will be held Feb. 19 sponsored by the Northwest Michigan Sustainable Business Forum.

The event is from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Michigan Works Service Center at 1209 S. Garfield Ave. in Traverse City. It will feature David Konkle of Local Governments for Sustainability, an international association of government groups that promotes sustainable development, along with local renewable energy consultant Steve Smiley of Heron Wind.

The workshop is free and registration is available by contacting Patty O'Donnell, regional planner for the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments, at 929-5039. More information on the workshop is available at www.nmmsbf.org.
