State canola project meeting is March 4
ELLSWORTH -- The Michigan Canola Project will hold a meeting March 4 at Banks Township Hall to discuss raising canola in northwest Michigan.
The project is a group of farmers, agri-business entrepreneurs and Michigan State University Extension staff working on an added-value canola industry in Michigan. The meeting will include a presentation on canola's potential as a cash crop from Dr. Russ Freed of MSU, while Dan Blackledge of Marion Bio Energy LLC will talk about the work of the Canola Project. Stan Moore of MSU Extension in Antrim County will discuss recommended canola production practices, while Bernie Steenwyk of Ellsworth Farmers Exchange will review seed, fertilizer and herbicide options.
The free program is from 1 to 4 p.m. and open to the public. Attendees are asked to register by Tuesday at 533-8818.
Farm safety program offered
TRAVERSE CITY -- A farm safety program will be offered March 9 at the Northwest Michigan Horticultural Research Station in Bingham Township.
The event is from 1 - 4 p.m. and will center on farm emergency preparedness with presenters Craig Anderson and Deb Chester. Two pesticide applicator re-certification credits will be available.
The $10 fee includes a noon lunch catered by Ethnic Garden Catering. Sign-up is needed by Tuesday and available by contacting Leelanau County's MSU Extension office at 256-9888.
Apple products donated to Haiti
GRAWN -- Cherry Growers Inc. donated a truckload of apple products to relief efforts in Haiti.
The Grawn-based fruit cooperative donated applesauce and apple juice made from Michigan-grown apples to assist with relief efforts from the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti. The Michigan Apple Committee said the products were picked up Feb. 19 and delivered to Haiti by the Convoy of Hope relief organization based in Springfield, MO.
Cherry Growers is a grower-owned cooperative comprised of cherry and apples growers in northwest Michigan that dates to 1939.
