Vehicle thefts are under investigation

TRAVERSE CITY -- Police are investigating multiple thefts from vehicles in Traverse City.

Two vehicles in the 5th and 6th streets areas were broken into overnight Tuesday, police said. City police responded near the intersection of Rose and Kelly streets on a report of a theft in progress Wednesday night. Officers didn't locate anyone in the area, but property from the vehicle was recovered on a nearby sidewalk.

Police caution residents to secure their vehicles and keep an eye out for suspicious activity in the wake of the incidents.

A negotiator for employees in Charlevoix Public Schools said the groups are close to finalizing new contracts with the district after more than a year of talks.

JRC shutters Boyne City newspaper

Journal Register Co. will shutter another weekly newspaper in northern Michigan. The Boyne City Citizen-Journal printed its last edition this week, ending a community tenure that extended for more than 120 years.

Street fair ties in with madrigal dinner

Former DNR officer to be sentenced

Former state conservation officer Kevin Lockman will be sentenced for receiving and concealing stolen property next week. Lockman, 35, of Boyne City, will appear Nov. 7 before 33rd Circuit Court Judge Richard Pajtas in Charlevoix. He pleaded guilty to receiving and concealing stolen property between $200 and $1,000, a misdemeanor.

East Jordan girl, 12, killed in ATV crash

An East Jordan eighth-grader died and another was seriously injured in an all-terrain vehicle crash. Danielle Pawelski, 12, was killed in a four-wheeler crash around 8 p.m. Wednesday in Charlevoix County's Wilson Township. Her passenger, Tiffany Eplett-Walden, also 12, was airlifted by North Flight EMS to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.

Stolen funds allegedly used for wife's defense

A former state conservation officer faces a felony count for allegedly spending more than $33,000 on a lawyer to defend his wife from embezzlement charges. Kevin Lockman, 35, of Boyne City, was charged this week in 90th District Court in Charlevoix County for receiving and concealing stolen property in excess of $20,000, a 10-year felony.
