WOLVERINE -- A Wolverine teenager died after being struck by a vehicle in Cheboygan County's Wilmot Township.

Emergency responders were called at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday to Wolverine Road, east of Shire Road, after a car driven east by Patrick James Murphy, 56, of Wolverine, struck pedestrian Nicholas Leese, 17, also of Wolverine.

Leese was pronounced dead at the scene, said trooper Mark Tamlyn from the Michigan State Police post in Cheboygan.

Leese wore dark clothing while he walked home along the side of the road during poor weather conditions and it was still before dawn, all considered factors in the collision, Tamlyn said.

Police await toxicology and crash reports before the case will be sent for review by the prosecutor.

Murphy has no driving violations on his record, said Fred Woodhams, spokesman for the Michigan Secretary of State's Office.

Work on Mackinac Bridge expected until July

It may be slow going across Mighty Mack this spring and early summer. A $3.2 million construction project will begin today on the lanes of the Mackinac Bridge going north, as workers repair the concrete deck and steel joints, along with the replacement of concrete curbs.

Woman accused of embezzlement

An Indian River woman faces felony charges for allegedly embezzling $40,000 from a nonprofit medical group in Cheboygan County. Vicky Lee Johnson, 56, is charged with uttering and publishing, embezzlement of more than $20,000, larceny of more than $20,000 and receiving and concealing stolen property. Johnson was arraigned in 89th District Court and is set to appear Feb. 14 in 53rd Circuit Court in Cheboygan.
