CHEBOYGAN -- State police are investigating the discovery of human remains found on the Lake Huron shoreline in Cheboygan County.
The partial remains were found Monday on a rocky beach near the border with Presque Isle County by the owners of a nearby cabin. An autopsy will be done in Grand Rapids to determine the cause of death, whether the victim is a man or a woman, and identify the remains, police said.
Two men are listed as missing in the Straits of Mackinac area, including Charles Rutherford, Jr., of Grosse Pointe Farms, and Henry Stauffer from Washington, D.C.
Rutherford was in a boating accident in August 2005 with his girlfriend, Lana Stempien, whose body was recovered a few miles from where the new remains were found. Stauffer was a passenger in an aircraft that crashed in the Straits area in August 2007. The body of his fiancé and pilot, Karen Dodds, was recovered near the Mackinac Bridge last October.
