Elk Rapids man faces murder charge

CHEBOYGAN -- An Elk Rapids man is charged with murder.

Cheboygan County sheriff's deputies arrested Thomas Joseph Waligora Tuesday afternoon. Police believe Waligora, 50, killed Jonathan Roy Williams, 29, of Wolverine.

Waligora was arraigned Wednesday. He's charged with one count of first-degree murder and/or felony murder, one count of first-degree home invasion and one count of carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, according to a police statement.

Police went to a Wolverine apartment Monday for a death investigation and found evidence of a homicide, according to the statement. Waligora was arrested in Elk Rapids and is being held in the Cheboygan County jail without bond.

Work on Mackinac Bridge expected until July

Woman accused of embezzlement

An Indian River woman faces felony charges for allegedly embezzling $40,000 from a nonprofit medical group in Cheboygan County. Vicky Lee Johnson, 56, is charged with uttering and publishing, embezzlement of more than $20,000, larceny of more than $20,000 and receiving and concealing stolen property. Johnson was arraigned in 89th District Court and is set to appear Feb. 14 in 53rd Circuit Court in Cheboygan.
