CHEBOYGAN -- Volunteers are sought to protect spawning sturgeon from poachers.
The Black Lake Michigan chapter of Sturgeon for Tomorrow wants volunteers to monitor the fish spawn in Cheboygan County's Black River during a month-long period, from late April through late May. Volunteers report suspicious activity to state conservation officers.
Sturgeon can live up to a century and weigh more than 200 pounds, often growing to five- and six-foot lengths. The fish are vulnerable to poachers as they spawn on shallow rocky river beds.
Many sturgeon guarding dates and times are open. Call Brenda Archambo at (231) 625-2776 for more information or visit www.sturgeonfortomorrow.org.
