Glass, Lions target 3rd title

Leland standout runs Penn State's offense

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- The record 96 straight wins are impressive, though the Penn State women's volleyball team is focused on an even more important streak.

The quest for an unprecedented third straight NCAA women's volleyball title begins Friday in Happy Valley.

In typical dominating fashion, the top-ranked Nittany Lions breezed through the regular season, sweeping all but four of its 32 wins. Penn State has dropped just five sets all season.

Yet coach Russ Rose also has his team well-conditioned to forget about the past and focus on the "one-game-at-a-time" motto.

"You could win, you could go 32-0 in the regular season like we did, and if you don't uphold what you want to uphold in the postseason, you're not going to be remembered for what you want to be remembered for," junior libero Alyssa D'Errico said.

They've created only happy memories during a remarkable two-plus season-run of success.

The Nittany Lions' last loss was in September 2007 to Stanford. Their 96 straight victories marks the second-longest winning streak in Division I team sports, behind only the 137-match streak by the Miami men's tennis program.

Penn State has won the Big Ten seven straight seasons, considered another impressive run by volleyball aficionados in one of the sport's toughest conferences.

Most of the sport's followers consider the 2008 national title squad to be one of the best collection of volleyball talent ever.

The holdovers from that team, most notably setter Alisha Glass (Leland) and Big Ten player of the year and outside hitter Megan Hodge, have done just fine for themselves, though, in 2009.

Penn State opens the first round tonight against Binghamton (15-15, 5-5), the America East champions.
