College Notes: Burke comes up big for Colgate

TRAVERSE CITY -- Colgate failed on the scoreboard in its test against the University of Massachusetts.

But Erik Burke passed -- literally -- with high marks.

A senior wide receiver from Traverse City Central, Burke caught a career-high nine passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns in the Raiders' 35-17 loss to UMass, ranked second in the latest Football Championship Subdivision poll.

The Patriot League offensive player of the week, Burke hauled in a 30-yard touchdown reception with 30 seconds remaining in the first quarter and hauled in a 3-yard scoring strike midway through the final quarter for Colgate (1-1). With the yardage, Burke became the 18th player in school history to gain over 1,000 yards and he's 16th all time with 1,139 yards.

• Another former area football player who had a big performance in a losing effort was Winona State (Minn.) strong safety Tyler Perkette (TC West).

Perkette had a team-high 11 tackles -- seven solo -- in a 49-28 loss against the University of South Dakota. Perkette also had one tackle behind the line of scrimmage for a loss of 2 yards and broke up a pass for the Warriors (1-1).

• Albion College sophomore Mason Husby (TC Central) tied for medalist honors at the first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association golf jamboree at The Medalist Golf Club with a 73.

Husby, who made it around the back nine in 34 shots, was the first Briton to tie for medalist honors since 2003. Albion finished third in the team standings with a 320.

Hope College junior Don Kring (TC St. Francis) was sixth overall with a 77 as the Dutchmen were second with a 314.

• Sophomore midfielder Brendan Hall (TC West) had a goal and an assist to help Albion College top Concordia University (Ill.) 6-1 on Saturday for its first win of the season. Hall's assist came in the first half and his goal in the second half for the Britons (1-3).

Hall scored a goal on a 22-yard shot in a 3-2 loss to Manchester College (Ind.) on Tuesday.

• In his first cross country race for BYU, junior Stephan Shay (Central Lake) was the top finisher for the host Cougars at the BYU Autumn Classic. Shay was second overall with a time of 19:29.3.

• Carnegie-Mellon senior fullback Travis Sivek (TC St. Francis) found the end zone for the third time this season in a 16-6 victory over Grove City College on Saturday.

Sivek scored on a 1-yard plunge midway through the third quarter for Carnegie-Mellon (2-0). He finished the day with 47 yards on 15 carries.

• A pair of former area soccer players got into then scorebook in Kalamazoo's season-opening 4-1 victory over Defiance on Saturday.

Freshman defender Ben Darling (Suttons Bay) assisted on the first score of the season by the Hornets. Kalamazoo's second goal was by sophomore midfielder Bryan Rekowski (Petoskey).

• Rain and lightning reduced the Purdue/Midwest Shootout to an 18-hole event.

University of Michigan junior Bill Rankin (TC Central) was one of five players to shoot a 1-under 71 for medalist honors. The Wolverines won the event with a 5-over 293.

• Several local players starred in Calvin College's 3-0 victory over Alma College on Wednesday.

Sophomore Kelsey Sears (TC West) had 11 digs for Calvin College.

For Alma, junior Jennifer Bassett-Payne (TC St. Francis) had 15 digs, senior Amanda Risch (Cadillac) 11 digs and freshman Hannah Hewitt (Harbor Light Christian) 34 assists and 10 digs. Bassett-Payne was also a defensive standout for the Scots at the Wooster Tournament on the weekend.

• Junior nose tackle Brad Bush (Gaylord) was part of Saginaw Valley State's staunch defense in a 49-7 rout of Gannon on Saturday. Bush had six total tackles, one for a loss of 2 yards, for SVSU (1-1).

• Concordia-St. Paul junior keeper Keyton Wheelock (TC West) had a couple of long games in goal last week.

Wheelock made four saves while playing all 110 minutes of a 0-0 double overtime tie against St. Cloud State on Sunday. Wheelock made six saves in a 1-0 victory by the Golden Bears (1-4-1) against seventh-ranked Winona State on Wednesday.

• The Grand Valley State volleyball team, ranked 13th in Division II, won all four of its matches at the Ashland Invitational over the weekend. Senior middle blocker Erica Vandekopple (Pellston) had 41 kills for the Lakers (10-2) to go along with eight aces, 12 digs and 17 total blocks.

• A pair of former area runners posted top-15 finishes at the Northwood University Invitational on Friday.

On the women's side, Ferris State University senior Margot McGlothlin (Suttons Bay) was 10th in 20:04.48. Saginaw Valley State University senior Eric LaCross (Cheboygan) was 15th in the men's race in 27:47.46.

• Freshman linebacker Eric Gordon (TC West) had two solo tackles, two assists and broke up a pass during Michigan State's 28-17 victory over Bowling Green on Saturday.

• The Lake Superior State volleyball team went 1-2 at the Minnesota-Duluth Classic. Sophomore outside hitter Holly Orban (Suttons Bay) had six kills, 14 digs, two aces and two total blocks for the Lakers (4-7).

• Aquinas College junior keeper Ben Richardson (TC Central) allowed just one goal in two games last week, a 2-1 loss to Siena Heights on Saturday and a 2-1 victory over Indiana Tech on Tuesday.

• The Northern Michigan University volleyball team went 3-1 at the Argonaut Regional Crossover Tournament in Pensacola, Fla. to improve to 6-6. Sophomore Callie Youngman (Cadillac) had 22 digs in the tournament.

• Senior cornerback Troy Blasius (Gaylord St. Mary) had his first interception of the season in Hope College's 36-17 loss to Central (Iowa) on Saturday. In addition to his pick, Blasius had nine total tackles -- four of which were solo -- and four kickoff returns for 113 yards.

Senior tight end Jack Kiefer (Manistee) caught three passes for 56 yards for the Dutchmen (0-2) in the contest.

• Senior Chris Robertz (Elk Rapids) used his home-course advantage on Friday, placing third (25:53) at the Aquinas Invitational. Freshman teammate Sean McGlothlin (Suttons Bay) was 37th in 27:33.

• Junior defender Andrew Evans (Petoskey) had two shots on goal and an assist as the Olivet College men's soccer team blasted Concordia University (Ill.) by a 7-0 score on Friday. Senior defender Marcus Matthews (Buckley) had one shot on goal for the Comets.

Evans and Matthews each had three shots on goal as Olivet (2-2) lost 2-1 to Manchester College (Ind.) on Saturday.

• The Lake Superior State and Northern Michigan University cross country teams squared off at the Lake State Open.

LSSU senior Ben Tarbutton (Gaylord St. Mary) won the men's race in 17:42 while junior teammate Luke Allen (Onekama) was fifth in 18:00. Lakers' sophomore Ashley Quick (Harbor Springs) was eighth in the women's race in 21:32.

• The Penn State University volleyball team won all three matches at its home tournament by 3-0 scores. Sophomore setter Alisha Glass (Leland) had 17 assists in the final game against Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday.

• Senior Wren Chellis (Ellsworth) started at left tackle for Alma College on Saturday as the Scots opened the 2007 season with a 35-34 loss at Cornell College (Iowa).

• The University of Michigan women's cross country team dominated the non-scoring Indiana Open on Saturday. Junior Claire Otwell (TC Central) was 17th overall (19:35) for the Wolverines.

• Northwood University junior Pat Nelson (Gaylord) started on defense as the Timberwolves evened their men's soccer record at 2-2 with wins over Saint Joseph's College (3-1) and Alma College (4-0) last week.

• Senior goalie Jennie Smith (TC West) made two saves as a reserve as the Kalamazoo College women's soccer team improved to 4-0 on Saturday with a 5-1 victory over Defiance College.

• Senior Eric Wohlford (Cadillac) was the top finisher for the Kalamazoo College men's cross country team at the GLCA Championships at Kenyon College on Saturday. Wohlford was 35th in a time of 28:23.

• Hillsdale College sophomore Bill Kanitz (Cadillac) and Northern Michigan University freshman Andy Strobel (Petoskey) each had two assisted tackles when the two teams squared off on Saturday. Hillsdale (2-0) was able to claim a 42-41 victory over the Wildcats (0-2).

  • MSU won't surprise anyone next year

    Michigan State was an unexpected Final Four participant after fighting through injuries to several key players. The Spartans won't surprise anyone next season. Only one key player, Raymar Morgan, was a senior on a team that lost to Butler.

  • Glads Greiner relishes tourney trip

    When a national champion is crowned on Monday and the 2010 NCAA tournament comes to a close, it will have a special meaning for Holden Greiner. After all, it was a tournament he was a part of. Greiner, a Traverse City St. Francis alum, helped Lehigh to a school-record 22 victories and its first appearance in the NCAA tournament since 2004. Not bad for a true freshman.

His cell phone vibrates constantly, and his windowed office on campus gives friends and strangers a chance to knock on the glass and give him a big thumbs-up. There have been a lot of those lately.
