TRAVERSE CITY -- That helps.
The 12th-ranked Notre Dame hockey team bounced back from a slow start to the season to post a pair of 4-1 victories on the East Coast this weekend.
Senior center Justin White, a Traverse City West product, picked up points in both games for the Irish (6-2).
White had a pair of assists as Notre Dame topped Providence 4-1 on Saturday. White had one assist in a 4-1 triumph over No. 2 Boston College on Friday night.
In eight games this season, White has four points.
-- Wayne State sophomore Kristi Werner (East Jordan) needed a top 15 finish at Saturday's Division II Midwest Regional. Werner did one better.
Werner took 14th to earn all-region recognition, completing the 6K course in 22:46.2. Wayne State was second overall to qualify for the NCAA Championships in Slippery Rock, Penn. on Nov. 22.
Northwood senior Syrena Rexroat (Lake Leelanau St. Mary's) was 84th overall with a time of 25:08.1.
In the men's portion of the regional, Michigan Tech sophomore Ian Connick (TC Central) was 67th in 33:59.3 while Saginaw Valley State sophomore Jesse Evans (Cheboygan) was 86th in 34:33.8.
-- Senior goalkeeper Polly Cline (TC Central) made four saves as the University of Chicago closed the regular-season with a 1-0 triumph over Washington U.
Chicago (12-5-1) earned an invitation to the Division III women's soccer playoffs and will face Wittenberg (11-3-6) on Wednesday.
-- Penn State tied an NCAA women's volleyball record with its 52nd straight victory, a 25-20, 25-11, 25-18 win over Michigan State on Friday. The top-ranked Nittany Lions were coming off a 25-13, 25-14, 25-22 triumph over Indiana.
Every win this season by Penn State (26-0, 14-0) has been a sweep.
Junior setter Alisha Glass (Leland) continues to keep the Nittany Lions running smoothly on offense. Glass had 40 assists, four digs, two solo blocks and three block assists against MSU and had 31 assists, one kill, seven digs and one solo block versus the Hoosiers.
-- Saginaw Valley State senior defensive tackle Brad Bush (Gaylord) forced two fumbles as the Cardinals closed out their season with a 26-14 victory over Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Ferris State on Saturday. Bush had four total tackles, half a sack and one quarterback hurry for SVSU (7-3).
Junior defensive end Joe Morrow (Kingsley) assisted on a tackle behind the line of scrimmage for Ferris State (6-5, 5-5 GLIAC).
-- Senior goalkeeper Ben Richardson (TC Central) made eight saves and senior Erich Jackson (Petoskey) had an assist as Aquinas shut out Davenport 5-0 in the semifinals of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference men's soccer tournament.
In addition, Richardson was a second-team all-league selection while Jackson received honorable mention. Richardson was also named to the all-academic team.
-- Sophomore linebacker Eric Gordon (TC West) rang up 10 tackles as Michigan State remained in the Big Ten football title picture with a 21-7 victory over Purdue on Saturday. Two of Gordon's tackles for the Spartans (9-2, 6-1 Big Ten) were solo stops.
-- Ferris State sophomore defenseman Zach Redmond (TC Central) picked up the assist on the Bulldogs' first goal in a 2-1 Central College Hockey Association win over Miami of Ohio. It was the sixth assist of the season for Redmond.
-- In its fifth season in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, Trine won its first football title with a 9-0 win over Adrian on Saturday. Sophomore halfback Jeff Langley (Inland Lakes) had 12 rushes for 44 yards and also caught a pass for the Thunder (9-0, 6-0 MIAA).
-- Maryland's men's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 2-1 triumph over No. 20 North Carolina on Saturday. Freshman forward Casey Townsend (TC West) had an assist for the fifth-ranked Terrapins (15-3, 6-2 ACC).
Maryland will face North Carolina again on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament.
-- Aquinas won the men's WHAC cross country title on Saturday. Sophomore Sean McGlothlin (Suttons Bay) took sixth in the race with a time of 25:48.08.
-- Sophomore defensive tackle Alex Gilde (McBain) picked up a pair of tackles to help Grand Valley State complete a 10-0 season with a 24-10 triumph over Wayne State on Saturday.
The Lakers are the top seed in Super Region 3 and will host the winner of this weekend's Ashland-Minnesota State game on Nov. 22.
-- Michigan Tech dropped a close 3-2 decision to Wisconsin in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game on Friday. Junior defenseman Mike VanWagner (TC Central) picked up his first assist of the season for the Huskies (2-6, 1-5 WCHA).
-- Junior H-back Billy Kanitz (Cadillac) helped Hillsdale close out its football season on a high note with a 37-36 victory over Tiffin on Saturday.
Kanitz carried the ball two times for 6 yards, one of which was a 1-yard touchdown run, for the Chargers (7-4, 6-4 GLIAC).
-- Northern Michigan sophomore safety Andrew Strobel (Petoskey) had seven tackles -- four of which were solo -- as the Wildcats finished their football season on Saturday with a 24-6 loss to Indianapolis. The Wildcats were 2-8 in 2008.
-- After leading the Northern Michigan women's soccer team with 11 goals, sophomore forward Kari Buckel (TC Central) was named to the all-GLIAC second team.
-- Sophomore forward Cody Omilusik (TC Central) picked up an assist on Army's final goal as the Knights topped American International 4-3 in an Atlantic Hockey Association contest on Saturday. Army is 2-4-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the AHA.
-- Central Michigan's men's basketball team opened up its exhibition season with a 75-55 victory over Marygrove on Saturday. Junior guard Robbie Harman (TC Central) started and had six points and three assists for the Chippewas.
-- Olivet College senior Andrew Evans (Petoskey) notched his third goal of the season in the Comets' 4-0 win over Alma on Wednesday. Olivet finished the season 10-9-1 overall and 8-6 in the MIAA.
-- Concordia-St. Paul senior goalkeeper Keyton Wheelock (TC West) received honorable mention on the all-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's soccer team.
Wheelock played in 17 of the team's 20 games and posted four shutouts. Wheelock led the NSIC with 149 saves, an average of 8.76 saves per game.
In her career, Wheelock played in 47 games and more than 4,000 minutes in the net. She had 13 shutouts and made 319 career saves.
-- The Detroit women's soccer team saw its season end with a 6-1 loss to Butler in the Horizon League tournament. Freshman Alyssa Korson (Lake Leelanau St. Mary's) started all 18 games on defense for the 8-9-1 Titans, finishing with one goal.
-- Calvin and Alma College won quarterfinal matches in the MIAA Tournament before the last two rounds were postponed and eventually canceled due to a virus outbreak that swept through the Hope College campus.
Calvin downed Kalamazoo 3-0 on Tuesday to improve to 26-4 and earn an invitation to the Division III NCAA tournament, where the Knights will take on Wisconsin-Whitewater (29-9) on Thursday.
Against Kalamazoo, freshman outside hitter Erin Vander Plas (McBain Northern Christian) had four kills, two digs and two block assists.
Alma (21-9) downed Albion in the MIAA tournament as sophomore setter Hannah Hewitt (Harbor Light Christian) had 33 assists, eight digs and two block assists. Senior Katie Porter (Cheboygan) added 14 digs and senior Jennifer Bassett-Payne (TC St. Francis) four digs.
-- Hope blanked Albion 4-0 in a MIAA men's soccer match on Wednesday. Sophomore midfielder Andrew Nichols (TC West) had his third goal of the season for the Dutchmen (14-2-3, 10-2-1 MIAA).
-- Senior co-captain and Army linebacker John Plumstead (Benzie Central) had two tackles as the Knights lost 38-31 at Rice on Saturday.
-- The Aquinas women's soccer team saw its season end with a 1-0 loss to Siena Heights in the semifinals of the WHAC tournament. Senior defender Kaitlyn Burns (TC West) received honorable mention on the all-WHAC team.
-- Sophomore guard Nicole Marshall (Frankfort) and sophomore forward Jill Walton (Kingsley) each had 10 points as the Lake Superior State women's basketball team topped Alaska-Anchorage 70-65 in overtime in the finals of the Disney Tip-Off Classic on Nov. 2. Walton added five rebounds, one assist and one steal and Marshall three boards, two assists and one steal.
-- The St. Mary's men's hockey team is still looking for its first win of the season after a 6-2 loss to Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday. Sophomore Mike Glaesmer (TC West) had his third assist of the season in the loss.
-- Lake Superior State's volleyball season came to a close with a 3-1 loss to Saginaw Valley State on Friday. Junior outside hitter Holly Orban (Suttons Bay) had four kills while playing in just one game for the Lakers (6-18, 2-14 GLIAC).
Freshman middle hitter Jessica Hass (Harbor Light Christian) had four kills, one solo block and five block assists for Saginaw Valley (21-6, 11-5). The Cardinals play Michigan Tech in the quarterfinals of the GLIAC tournament on Wednesday.
-- The Michigan State men's golf team finished the fall portion of its schedule at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate, which concluded on Tuesday. Senior Randy Hutchison (TC Central) tied for 23rd with a 229 (76-73-80).
-- Kalamazoo sophomore Dan Kellogg (TC West) had an assist to help the men's soccer team sting Trine 2-1 on Wednesday. The Hornets finished the season 6-13 and 3-11 in the MIAA.
-- Sophomore Brenna Banktson (Frankfort) had eight points, 11 rebounds and two assists as the Western Michigan women's basketball team downed Davenport 86-66 in its exhibition opener. Junior Jenny Loney (Frankfort) added eight points, three rebounds and one steal.
