Summer solstice birthday at the beach

Spring turned to summer and Traverse City resident Jo Ann Day turned 63 at a summer solstice birthday celebration attended by 17 of her friends. Fourteen of those friends attended Traverse City St. Francis High School and graduated in 1967. They all turn 63 this year.

Helping Jo Ann celebrate on the beach on West Bay were Rita Hurchick, Lu Ann Doriot, Lynn Forton, Ann Drury, Marcia Krider, Pauline Ferris, Sue Smith, Noreen Chapin, Kathy Hentschel, Mary Jo Lance, Phil Hanson, Mary Conroy, Margie Glazier, Suzette Hoxie, Mary Ann Kaminskis and Cathy Cuddington. Dave Eickenroth, a founding members of the Rainmakers, a local group from the 1960s, was on hand to entertain the group with '60s guitar music.

Sherri Freels from the Maritime Heritage Alliance wrote to thank everyone who contributed to the success of a fund-raising screening of "Hide Away."

The film's producer allowed MHA to show the film prior to its release and the State Theatre through Deb Lake and Lewis Dickinson very generously allowed the organization to show the movie at the downtown theater. They also were generous in distribution of the proceeds, Sherri wrote.

Sherri also wrote that Prout Financial was generous with their donation of copying costs and the use of employee Shea Petaja for a day, while the Park Place provided a room for the film's producer Sally Jo Effenson, who was in town to attend the screening.

"There was a gathering and silent auction at Minervas after the move showing," Sherri wrote. "The following donated items and services for the auction: the Park Place, the Boat House, Yen Yoga, Bay Breeze Charters, Nubs Nob Resort, TACS, SCUBA North, Traverse Tall Ship Co., Brauer Productions, the Watershed, Paddleboard Rentals, the Great Lakes Children's Museum, Brett Derr, Charles Murphy and Wet Mitten Surf Shop."

Grand Traverse Ophthalmology Clinic's Spring Trunk Show raised $5,175 to benefit the Traverse Health Clinic-CHAP, My Sister's House and Munson Hospice House. Each organization received $1,725.

"We are delighted to be able to give back to the community by supporting these wonderful charities and to bring to the forefront the services of these organizations who help those in need in our area," said GTOC's Matthew Madion, M.D.
