Northern Notes: Helping Hands group gets a helping hand

Brad and Trina Jewett of Traverse City thought the Fourth of July was the perfect day to raise "Old Glory" for the first time.

That's just what they did at 8 a.m.this past July 4 at Culver Meadows, 1661 W. Silver Lake Road.

The 15-foot by 25-foot American flag waves proudly at the top of a 60-foot flag pole and the public is invited to stop by any time to view it.

Northern Michigan Helping Hands of Traverse City wrote to report that its Strawberry Social Auction Fundraiser was a huge success.

The nonprofit organization provides services directly to those in need.

Funds raised will support programs such as the durable medical equipment loan closet, an annual wheelchair clinic, scoliosis screening and a summer speech therapy program.

"We would like to thank all who generously donated many unique gift items for the silent and live auctions," wrote Deborah L. Roth, program director. "Mother Goose made an appearance and John Thompson, Steve Stanton and fellow musicians entertained throughout the afternoon. Northern Michigan Helping Hands would like to give a special thank-you to our sponsors Traverse City Elks Lodge, Leelanau Fruit, Stonehouse Bread, Jen-Tees, Martinson Funeral Home, Eagle Machine, Wicksall Distributors, Centrun Machine & Tool, Ed and Barbara Fleis and Larry and Jackie Fleis."

The Old Mission Women's Club recently held its annual garage sale and sold more than $5,700 worth of gently used items donated by the club's 150-plus members. Unsold items were donated to Goodwill.

The club was organized in 1931. It is a nonprofit organization dedicated exclusively to charitable and educational purposes.

Garage sale proceeds will be used to provide cash awards to various area human service and community organizations. Other club fundraisers include a Christmas cookie sale, volunteering at the Parade of Homes and the National Cherry Festival, and providing cookies for the Bayshore Marathon.
