The leaves are just starting to change colors, which means that Jack Frost and Old Man Winter aren't far behind. Radio Station KHQ and Skilled Manufacturing of Traverse City want to make sure area children are protected against the winter elements and have kicked off their third annual KHQ/Skilled Manufacturing Cares of Kids Coat Drive.
Skilled Manufacturing, a custom parts and precision machining company, originally spearheaded a coat drive that has become a passionate mission for Marnie Warren, of human resources at Skilled Manufacturing.
"We believe that no child should ever have to go outside in a northern Michigan winter without the proper attire and we are making a difference," Marnie said. "To see the joy in a child's face when they find a 'new' coat is the greatest feeling in the world."
Donations of new or gently used coats, hats, boots, scarves and gloves, with a heavy emphasis on children's clothing, will be accepted through Oct. 30 in Traverse City at Master Dry Cleaners, Two Men and a Truck, Sam's Club and the Skilled Manufacturing offices on Cass Road and Aero Park Drive. Cash donations also are encouraged.
The public is invited to the coat distribution event, set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 7 at Skilled Manufacturing, 3600 Cass Road.

The Grand Traverse Area Community Living Management Corporation is an organization dedicated to providing quality, supportive housing and essential support services for adults with disabilities. Bonnie Sobbry, a board member of the CLMC, wrote on the corporation's behalf to thank Adam Dalgliesh of Timeless Gardens for completing a wonderful beautification project for the Community Living Center on Barlow Street in Traverse City.
"Adam is a master gardener with a degree in plant science from Michigan State University (and) is a specialist in garden restoration and landscaping," Bonnie wrote. "Adam developed an entrance garden for the (property), donating numerous volunteer hours in design and installation of the garden. Adam's brother, Jason, assisted him with the project, which is a beautiful enhancement to the property and is enjoyed by all."

Kay Charter, executive director of Saving Birds Thru Habitat, wrote on behalf of the organization to send their heartiest thanks and deepest appreciation to Brian Zimmerman, owner of Four Seasons Nursery, for the donation of native wildflowers.
"Mr. Zimmerman not only generously provided the plants and a crew to install them, he also brought his entire landscaping workforce up to learn about the importance of native vegetation to migrating and nesting birds," Kay wrote. "The gift of these plants extends our Prairie Demonstration Garden, which offers visitors examples of the beauty of North American prairie fauna."
