The Thistledown Shoppe, "the wee shoppe with a big heart" in Suttons Bay, is sponsoring a community project to help children fight the winter chill.
Needlecrafters are invited to knit or crochet hats, scarves, mittens or whatever they wish to create for area children. Items also will be accepted for the children's older brothers, sisters and parents. All items should be labeled for fiber content and care.
Donations will be accepted through November at Thistledown, 417 N. St. Joseph St. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Yarn Lover's Night is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays. For more information, call 271-9276.

Zander Lewis Lhamon was born Feb. 13, 2008. He loved bananas and Sid the Science Kid. He could hit and catch a ball and enjoyed being outside. Zander was 19 months old when his life was cut short, but he touched so many lives in the short time he was here.
On Sept. 14, his mom, Nadea Lhamon, went to get Zander up from his crib and faced a parent's worst nightmare when she found that he had quietly passed away.
"I used to tell each of our four children, when you make it to heaven run to God and don't look back," Nadea wrote. "I just didn't think it was going to be so soon."
Nadea went on to thank everyone for their support, prayers and gifts, with special thanks to the family's "awesome" church, Buckley Tabernacle.
"We can't begin to tell you how much you've meant to us," Nadea wrote. "Whether it was flowers, monetary gifts, food, acts of kindness, cards or kind words, thank you from the bottom of our hearts."

Barb Russell, a board member with Tri-County Coalition for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, wrote on behalf of the coalition to thank all the wonderful people who helped make its first "Cycle for Solutions" Family Fun Bike Ride a success.
The event was held to benefit the coalition's primary project, the establishment of a Children's Advocacy Center to benefit the needs of abused children in Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau counties.
"A big 'shout out' to Skilled Manufacturing employees who not only donated $1,000 to be the presenting sponsors (for the event), but also volunteered their time as well to be 'road marshals,'" Barb wrote.
