Prep Roundup: Benzie dominates jamboree

SUTTONS BAY -- Benzie Central dominated the first Northwest Conference Jamboree of the season Tuesday.

The Huskies scored a perfect 15 points to win the girls race. The boys were almost perfect, scoring 20 points.

In the girls race, Benzie took the top five spots -- Michaela Carnegie (20:00), Taylor Nye (20:16), Theresa Warsecke (20:26), Jill Lousignau (20:44) and Amber Peabody (20:47).

Kingsley finished second with 68 while Suttons Bay was third with 120. Rounding out the meet were Leland (134), Glen Lake (145), Frankfort (155), Mesick (159) and Buckley (164).

The Stags took ninth and 10th with Kirstin Volkening (21:50) and Samantha Krause (21:56). Kingsley also placed Alex McNair 16th (23:21), Alexis Keena 17th (23:48) and Katie Bembeneck 20th (23:54).

For the Norse, Julie Muldowney placed 18th (23:53), Olivia Raftshol 19th (24:14), Jordan Callewaert 21st (24:38), Madeline Hall 30th (27:10) and Yeo Min Lee 33rd (29:52).

Suttons Bay's Ben Wynsma was the individual winner in the boys race (17:07), but it was all Benzie after that. Right behind Wynsma were Tom Smeltzer (17:13), Talon Morris (17:20), Rick Jones (17:30), Dave Rhodes (17:35) and Travis Clous (17:47).

Suttons Bay finished second with 58 points. Kingsley was third with 60.

In addition to Wynsma, Suttons Bay had Chase Palmer place 12th (18:13), Juan Reyes 13th (18:18), Mark Jasinski 14th (18:39) and Travis Smith 18th (19:27).

Kingsley finished third with 60 points. Rachi Sims was seventh (17:49), Ben Simpson eighth (17:50), Conor Goggin ninth (17:55), Jake Likak 20th (19:15) and Ryan French 23rd (19:31).

Other team scores included Leland (116), Mesick (151), Frankfort (153) and Buckley (165).

Niki Laughlin earned medalist honors with a 45 Tuesday at Mistwood as Harbor Springs defeated Glen Lake 189-242.

Kate Cwikel and Meg Shepherd each shot 47 for the Rams while Andi Shepherd came in with a 50.

For Glen Lake, Lily Christiansen shot 53, Macy Henry 58, Molly Binsfeld 64 and Lena Cruz 67.

Glen Lake competes in the Traverse City Central tournament Friday at the Country Club.

Traverse City West won three doubles flights in a 5-3 Big North Conference loss to Petoskey.

Victorious for the Titans: Jacob Nestor-Joel Collins (6-2, 6-3) at No. 2 doubles, Ian Davis-Nick Tooley (7-5, 6-3) at No. 3 and Andrew Hartman-Matt White (6-3, 6-0) at No. 4.

Elk Rapids 2

Host Harbor Springs picked up a 6-2 Lake Michigan Conference win over Elk Rapids.

The Elks (3-4) had a 6-3, 6-3 win from Josh Mosher at No. 3 singles while the team of Daniel Parlin/Billy Wolfington took the top flight 6-4, 2-6, 6-0.

Harbor Springs had singles wins from Matt Matteson (6-4, 6-2), Steve Witte (6-2, 6-2) and Louie Walsh (6-1, 6-3), as well as wins from Robert Matthews/Stewart Bower (6-1, 6-0), Neil Zoerhof/Flick Mooridian (6-4, 6-7, 6-2) and Evan Kollath/Adam Parada (6-1, 6-1).

Petoskey JV White 0

Traverse City West's JV earned an 8-0 win over Petoskey's White JV.

The Titans had wins from Carter Payne, Lee Batcha, Charlie Pacer and Ben Greenman. Also winning were the teams of Jacob Diss/Graeme Placek, J.J. Chouinard/Kyle Hughey, Tyler Harris/Max Hughes and Andrew Baker/Tyler Markin.

SWIMMING

TC West 125.5
Ludington 60.5

Traverse City West moved to 2-2 on the season with a 125.5-60.5 win over Ludington.

The Titans had a state-qualifying time in the 200 freestyle relay in 1 minute, 45.32 seconds from Elly Maleski, Shelby Newhouse, Sarah Brunner and Megan Cepela. Maleski's split in the first leg of 25.55 was also good enough to qualify for states.

The four also swam to first in the 200 medley (1:59.30) while Kirstin Palmer, Kate Reed, Shay Williams and Paige Rogers won the 400 relay (4:05.04).

Brunner won the 200 IM (2:26.97) and the 100 butterfly (1:04.40), Maleski won the 50 free (25.87) and the 100 free (56.36), Williams took the 100 backstroke (1:08.19), Newhouse won the 100 breaststroke (1:13.71) while Kendall Cox won the diving (194).

TC Central also swam at the meet, but lost 103-83.

Erin Cover won the 100 butterfly (1:16.56) and the 200 IM (2:38.15) for the Trojans (1-3) while Claire Wodzien took the 500 free (6:06.22) and Talie Gerstle won the 100 breaststroke (1:24.56).

Both TC schools will be in action Saturday at Ogemaw Heights.
