Roundup: Northwest volleyball showdown set

BENZONIA -- The showdown is set in the Northwest Conference.

Benzie Central and Kingsley, tied atop the league volleyball standings at 6-0, collide next Tuesday to determine the regular season title.

Benzie (40-9-3) remained unbeaten in the league Tuesday with a 25-7, 25-12, 25-22 win over Suttons Bay.

Leading the Senior Night win: Kate Masell (nine digs, 17 of 18 serving with one ace), Kayley Moore (five kills, one block, four digs, 6 of 6 serving with two aces), Sara Thurkettle (12 kills, six blocks, six aces), Haeley Melton (10 kills, one block, seven digs) and Raenee Harig (25 assists, seven digs, 12 of 13 serving with one ace).

Kingsley 3
Glen Lake 0

Kingsley moved to 6-0 in the Northwest Conference with a sweep over Glen Lake.

The Stags (39-5-4) won 25-7, 25-13, 25-11.

Hannah Bach had 11 kills and two blocks for Kingsley, Sam Zubalik had nine kills, six digs and three aces, Lauren Leach had eight kills and three blocks, Chelsea Edgcombe tallied five kills and seven digs while Erica Berridge had 29 assists and eight digs.

Katie Nickerson, Emily Fasel, Bach, Edgcombe and Berridge were all perfect serving.

Leland 3
Frankfort 0

Leland evened its Northwest Conference record at 3-3 with a 25-11, 25-11, 25-13 win over Frankfort.

The Comets (14-20-1) were led by Tantzi Snyder (11 kills, three solo blocks, one ace), Elizabeth McKee (six kills, one block, three aces), Sarah Ruszel (six kills, five aces), Sammy Nowak (five kills, two blocks), Hanna Schaub (27 assists, four digs, three aces, two kills) and Melissa Loredo (five digs).

Central Lake 3
Forest Area 1

Central Lake, led by Jasmine Hines and Heidi Hicks, kept its Ski Valley title hopes alive with a 25-23, 19-25, 25-22, 25-22 win over Forest Area.

The Trojans are 6-1 in the league, a game behind Pellston. Those teams meet next Tuesday.

Forest Area (32-9-4, 5-2) was led by Katie Johnson (26 assists), Marissa Ingersoll (18 digs), Mae Johnson (12 digs, 11 kills) and Chelsea Strine (11 kills, 11 digs).

Elk Rapids 3
East Jordan 0

Elk Rapids improved to 6-2 in the Lake Michigan Conference with a 25-23, 25-18, 25-11 win over East Jordan.

The Elks (20-19-3) were sparked by Kelly Thelen (five assists), Kelly VanDusen (three aces, five kills), Courtney Isenhart (two aces, five digs), Sam Matthews (two kills), Sarah Otte (four aces, nine digs, one block), Jessie Spoor (one ace, seven kills, nine digs, three blocks) and Olivia Morrison (nine assists, one ace, two kills, nine digs).

The Elks host Charlevoix on Thursday.

GT Academy 3
Bear Lake 1

Grand Traverse Academy picked up a 24-26, 25-15, 25-14, 25-22 win over host Bear Lake.

The Mustangs (13-9-5) had eight kills, five blocks and a dig from Rachel Zeppa, four aces, four kills and four digs from Elise Campbell, nine aces from Brooke Olesnarge and four aces from Kaitlyn Schwartz.

In the JV game, GT Academy won 25-14, 25-20.

Grayling 1

Elk Rapids earned a 9-1 Lake Michigan Conference win over Grayling on Senior Night.

Tucker Hogarth had three goals for the Elks (8-11-1) while Nick Thompson, Justin Veliquette, Kevin Crellin, Parker Hogarth, Derek Johnson and Braden Ackerman all scored.

Oskar Salmhofer had three assists while Patrick Moran and Trevor Chase added one.

Thompson and Mitch Gribi split time in net and had nine saves.

TC Central JV 2
Alpena JV 0

The Traverse City Central JV posted a 2-0 win over Alpena.

Charley Needham and Kalvis Hornburg scored for the Trojans (17-1-1). Cooper Macdonell and Gabe Mercotte drew the assists. Colin Lesoski was in goal.

CROSS COUNTRY

Suttons Bay wins Sugarloaf Stampede

Suttons Bay's boys and the Grand Traverse Academy girls earned titles at the inaugural Lake Leelanau St. Mary's Sugarloaf Stampede.

The Norse won the boys title with 19 points. Ben Wynsma was first in 17:40, followed by teammates Juan Reyes (18:22), Chase Palmer (18:28) and Mark Jasinski (18:33) in the top four spots. Travis Smith was ninth (19:15).

St. Mary's placed Aaron Helwig fifth (18:54) and Caleb Korson seventh (18:56), Leland's Sam Scott was sixth (18:55) and Galen Whittaker eighth (18:58) while GT Academy's Alex Houston was 10th (19:42).

In the girls race, GT Academy scored 32 points to win, behind 1-2 finishes from Sophie Schuetze (21:26) and Stephanie Horning (21:31). Rowan Estenik was fourth (21:43), Elysia Campos seventh (22:47) and Lindsey White ninth (23:10).

Suttons Bay's Olivia Raftshol was third (21:41), Traverse City Christian's Emily Ritsema was fifth (22:04), Leland's Rory Price was sixth (22:35), St. Mary's Gabby Kuznicki was eighth (22:54) and Ashley Grant was 10th (23:16).

TENNIS

TC Central 8
Petoskey 0

Traverse City Central picked up an 8-0 win over Petoskey as the two teams tuned up for the weekend state finals.

The Trojans had singles wins from Hunter Bergsma (7-5, 6-2), Max Lundmark (6-0, 6-1), Harry Malone (6-1, 6-2) and Caleb Morgan (6-1, 6-0). Bergsma moved to 25-12 on the season while Lundmark is 30-6, Malone is 33-5 and Morgan is 31-3.

In doubles, Chris Heimburger and Peter Pappas moved to 36-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win. Matt Coleman and Jack Raymond reached 27-9 on the year with a 6-1, 6-0 victory, Clark Phelps and Spencer Potter won 6-3, 6-3 to improve to 33-4 while Mark Jones and Erik Krueger went to 35-2 with a 6-3, 6-0 win.
