FREMONT -- Traverse City Central showed its depth in winning the girls' crown in the Fremont Hill and Bale Invitational.
The Trojans placed five runners in the top 15, seven in the top 20, to beat future regional foes Grand Haven and East Kentwood. Central had 42 points, Grand Haven 49 and East Kentwood 80.
Runners had to hurdle bales of hay on the course.
The combined time of Central's top five runners was just over 1 hour, 39 minutes.
For the Trojans, Taylor Mattarella finished second (19:09), Julia Otwell fourth (19:32), Katie Perkins ninth (19:45), Charnele Lyons 12th (20:11) and Emily Westerman 15th (20:42).
Traverse City West came in sixth with 148 points. For the Titans, Elise Carolan finished 18th (21:15), Emmy Carter 28th (22:08), Jennifer Bragiel 31st (22:31), Paige Richards 35th (22:59) and Diana Hart 36th (23:00).
Central, which took 39 runners, swept the JV race with a perfect score of 15. Leading the Trojans: Kelsey Minor first (20:42), Maren Vahra second (20:59), Courtney Firman third (21:09), Sierra Olsen fourth (21:25), Adrienne Bruder fifth (21:26).
West's Kayle Noble was 11th (22:53) in the JV race.
Fremont won the boys race with 28 points. West was second with 78.
West was led by Geoff Burns, who took third (16:32). Erik Wilson placed seventh (17:10), Dan Riggins 14th (17:36), Mitch Snider 21st (17:51) and Matt Laylin 33rd (18:26).
Benzie girls edge Pine River at Buckley
Benzie Central edged Pine River on a tiebreaker to capture the girls title in the Buckley Invitational.
The two teams finished with 34 points, forcing the tiebreaker. Benzie's sixth runner, Kelsey Noah, placed 24th. Pine River's sixth runner was 26th.
Benzie's Devyn Ramsay was the individual winner in 19:20. The Huskies and Pine River had eight of the top nine runners.
Also counting for Benzie: Michaela Carnegie sixth (20:41), Crystal Alton seventh (20:57), Jill Louisignau ninth (21:28) and Taylor Nye 11th (21:35).
Pine River packed four runners in behind Ramsay. Lia Jones was second (19:33) to lead the Bucks.
Locally, Traverse City Christian's Amanda Send placed eighth (21:24), Lake Leelanau St. Mary's Breanna Korson 12th (21:41), Kingsley's Suzie Bussiere 13th (21:44), Traverse City Christian's Emily Ritsema 14th (21:54), Lake Leelanau St. Mary's Alyssa Korson 15th (22:14) and St. Francis' Morgan McCardel 16th (22:17.4) and Katy Olsen 17th (22:17.7).
Benzie also claimed the boys race with 28 points. The Huskies put five runners in the top 10, seven in the top 15. Leading the way: Morgan Gomez third (17:26), Scott McKeel fourth (17:27), Joe Smeltzer fifth (17:30), A.J. Patterson sixth (17:36), David Rodes 10th (18:30).
Kingsley came in second with 98 points. St. Francis was third with 106.
Pine River's Alex Vanias was the individual winner (16:25). Suttons Bay's Ben Wynsma placed second (17:24).
Locally, St. Frrancis' James Alpers was seventh (18:09), Kingsley's JJ Sanchez ninth (18:29), St. Francis' Alex Primeau 11th (18:33), Kingsley's Tom Sedlacek 12th (18:46) and Ty Sexton 13th (18:51).
Gaylord, Petoskey win at Charlevoix Classic
Gaylord, sparked by Sloan Secord, won the girls title in the Charlevoix Classic Invitational.
The Blue Devils had a combined time of 1:46:15. Troy Athens took second (1:47:39) and Petoskey third (1:52:07).
Sloan was the overall winner in the 11th-12th grade division in 20:07. Samantha Hunt was fourth (20:39), Amber Kassuba ninth (21:08) and Maria Kulka 15th (22:13). Amanda Olds was third in the 9th-10th grade division (22:08).
Central Lake's Kari Johnson finished second overall (20:16) in the 11th-12th grade division. Charlevoix's Alina Dhaseleer was fifth (20:39) and Glen Lake's Amber Therien sixth (20:40).
Cadillac's Emma Bizzigotti won the 9th-10th grade division (21:41).
Blaise Henning led Petoskey to the boys title. The Northmen had a combined time of 1:29:02. Ellsworth edged Charlevoix (1:34:33 to 1:34:47) for second.
Henning led the 11th-12th grade pack in 16:42. His brother, Derek, was third (17:20). Dan Kerr was sixth (17:47) for the Northmen, Travis Howard ninth (18:08) and Robbie Pemberton 13th (19:05).
Ellsworth's Ashton Fischer placed second overall (17:17) in the 11th-12th grade field. Harbor Springs' Tec Adams finished fourth (17:27), Charlevoix's Nick Wimmer fifth (17:36) and Alex Buday seventh (17:58), Ellsworth's Ruben Oviedo eighth (18:05).
Charlevoix's Eric Buday was the 9th-10th grade winner (18:50).
TC Central boys ninth at Brother Rice Invitational
The Traverse City Central boys placed ninth at the Brother Rice Invitational.
Ann Arbor Pioneer (70), won the meet. The Trojans finished with 271 points.
Jake Secor was 14th in 17:02 to pace the Trojans. Alex Lance was 40th (17:39), Dustin Sabins 50th (17:48), Mark Alanson 74th (18:21) and Aaron Trippe 93rd (18:36).
Drew Dancer was the top Central finisher in the JV race, taking 55th in 19:36.
Elk Rapids posts top five finishes at Bath Invite
The Elk Rapids boys were fourth and the girls fifth in the Division 2 portion of the Brett Clemens Invitational in Bath.
Williamston won the boys meet with 36 points. The Elks had 148. Placing for Elk Rapids were Thomas Lucas in 12th (17:13), Jim Janisse in 19th (17:38), Jake Mills in 21st (17:39), Ryan Sundberg in 24th (17:43) and Dylan Sundberg in 72nd (19:26).
Williamston also won the girls meet with 72 points. Elk Rapids had 167. The Elks' Amanda Hammer was second overall in 19:32. Sam Stites was 32nd (22:02), Molly Starr 36th (22:08), Sydney Vandeveer 47th (22:21) and Leah Harrington 50th (22:31).
