Cross Country Roundup: Central girls win

The Traverse City Central girls captured the Fremont Hill and Bale Invitational, beating last year's Division 1 state runner-up Grand Haven 45-53.

Katie Perkins led the Trojans, placing third (19:09.5). Julia Otwell came in fifth (19:29.5), Taylor Mattarella sixth (19:30.9), Marin Bahra 10th (19:49.7) and Aimee Marsh 19th (20:31.1).

Traverse City West was fourth with 108 points. For the Titans, Marcy Marek was 11th (19:55), Hannah Rickard 14th (20:13), Clancey Hawke 24th (20:56), Kaylee VanDommelen 27th (21:02) and Emmy Carter 32nd (21:38).

West was fifth in the boys meet with 106 points. East Kentwood edged Grand Haven in a tiebreaker for the title.

For West, Erik Wilson took 11th (17:17), Sebby Kucera 18th (17:31), Matt Laylin 19th (17:41), Ray Innis 24th (17:50) and Dylan Snider 34th (18:06).

The Titans won the JV race as Johan Laursen and Jack Lyon went one-two (17:50 and 18:08).

Trojan boys 14th at Brother Rice Invite

The Traverse City Central boys finished 14th in the 28-team Birmingham Brother Rice Invitational.

Ann Arbor Pioneer won with 46 points. Central had 381.

For the Trojans, Reese Karbowski placed 43rd (17:58), James Padden 68th (18:23), Drew Dancer 79th (18:35), Evan Cover 85th (18:38) and Alan Jacobson 106th (19:09).

St. Francis eighth, ninth at Charlevoix Classic

The TC St. Francis boys were eighth while the Gladiators' girls team was ninth at the Charlevoix Classic Cross Country Invitational.

Harbor Springs won the boys meet on the European-style course followed by Cadillac and Petoskey.

The Rams' Tec Adams was the individual winner in 16:28. Ellsworth's Ashton Fisher was second in 17:03.

Charlevoix's Eric Buday was first (18:44) and Petoskey's Michael Drake second (18:59) in the 9th-10th grade divsion.

Alex Primeau was 18th (18:40) and Alex Grieve 21st (18:49) to lead St. Francis. Ricky Woods ran a 19:14, Kevin Kane a 19:30 and James Alpers a 20:12.

Suttons Bay was 10th, led by a fourth-place finish from Ben Wynsma (17:13). Chase Palmer finished in 19:21 and Mark Jasinski in 19:59.

Dearborn Divine Child won the girls portion with Cadillac second and Petoskey third.

Cadillac's Kaitlyn Patterson was the individual winner in 19:22. Petoskey's Molly Touran was second in 20:39.

Dearborn Divine Child's Michelle Kerr took the 9th-10th grade division (20:57).Cadillac's Emma Bizzigotti was second (21:13).

Megan McCardel was 21st in 22:42 to lead St. Francis. Also scoring for the Glads were Kallie Klumpp (24:34), Addey Meachum (25:00), Kelly Zelinski (25:21) and Jessie Michelin (25:28).

Suttons Bay was 11th, led by a 23:45 from Jordan Callewaert. Julie Muldowney finished in 24:09 followed by Erin Dingrando (24:11) and Cassandra Buffum (25:17).

Maddie Danz of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton won the girls junior high race in 14:30. She was third overall.

Benzie Central sweeps invitational at Buckley

Benzie Central swept an invitational at Buckley.

The Huskies won the boys meet with 20 points. Kingsley was second with 66.

For Benzie, Tom Smeltzer was second (17:26), Talon Morris third (17:40), A.J. Patterson fourth (17:55), Marcus Lonn fifth (18:01) and Nick Radionoff sixth (18:05).

Benzie won the girls race over Pine River 23-57.

Michaela Carnegie took first (19:36), Taylor Nye second (20:20), Theresa Warsecke fourth (20:58), Jill Louisignau seventh (21:18) and Marika Garbowski ninth (21:29) for the Huskies.

  • Central runner heads to Northwestern

    When Katie Perkins was narrowing down her college search, it really came down to one school. Luckily, it's the same school she will be attending next fall. Perkins, a track and cross country standout at TC Central, will run at Northwestern.
