Cross Country Roundup: Petokey, Benzie prevail

PETOSKEY -- Petoskey put five runners in the top 11 to win the 11th-12th grade cross country title Saturday in the Petoskey Invitational.

Molly Touran finished second (20:04), Tia Kenfield fourth (20:44), Margaret Liederbach fifth (20:47), Kat Cartwright ninth (21:16) and Amy Bieganawski 11th (21:27) for Petoskey.

The Northmen had 31 points. Harbor Springs was second with 87.

Benzie Central's Devyn Ramsey was the overall winner (18:48). Morgan McCardel of St. Francis was third (20:40).

Harbor Springs placed two in the top 10 -- Alivia Murphy came in sixth (20:49) and Caitlin Reeves eighth (21:11). Benzie's Jill Louisignau was 10th (21:24).

Benzie won the 9th-10th grade division with 30 points. Harbor Springs was second with 59.

Benzie's Michaela Carnegie and Taylor Nye went one-two (19:20 and 20:01). Theresa Warsecke placed fifth (20:59), Marika Grabowski ninth (21:53) and Amber Peabody 13th (22:07).

Benzie defeated South Lyon 67-68 to win the boys 11th-12th grade race.

Benzie was paced by Talon Morris (sixth in 17:13), Tom Smeltzer (eighth in 17:20) and AJ Patterson (11th in 17:32).

Harbor Springs' Tec Adams was the overall winner (15:45). Suttons Bay's Ben Wynsma was second (16:35) and Charlevoix's Alex Buday third (16:46).

TC West was fifth (156), St. Francis sixth (211) and Traverse City Central 10th (312).

Matt Laylin was 17th (17:47) for West. Alex Primeau took 20th (18:06) for St. Francis. Scott LaBonte came in 34th (18:43) to lead Central.

West beat Charlevoix 63-83 to take the 9th-10th grade race.

For West, Jonah Laursen placed third (17:52), Hunter Swogger 12th (18:22), Dylan Snider 15th (18:29), Chris Onargo 16th (18:32) and Alex Hawke 17th (18:33).

Charlevoix's Eric Buds was second (17:45).

Traverse City Central was led by Caleb Thompson, who came in 18th (18:34).

TC Central 10th, West 14th at Jackson

The Traverse City Central boys placed 10th and West 14th in the 20-team Jackson Invitational.

For the Trojans, Alex Lance came in 34th (16:56), Reese Karbowski 47th (17:19), Evan Dancer 53rd (17:25), James Padden 58th (17:31) and Max Johnson 72nd (17:47).

For West, Heath Bristol finished 55th (17:28), Ray Innis 65th (17:40), Erik Wilson 76th (17:54), Sebby Kucera 78th (17:54) and Brad Clark 85th (18:07).

Marcy Marek posted a 17th place finish in 19:51 to lead TC West to an 11th place finish among 22 Division 1 teams at the Jackson Invitational.

The Titans finished with 246 points. Saline won the meet with 54.

Hannah Rickard was 36th (20:23), Clancey Howard was 51st (20:57), Paige Richards 66th (21:11) and Kaylee VanDommelen 78th (21:31).

West had four runners place in the top 25 at the JV meet. Colleen Cronin was sixth (22:15), Veronica Asch ninth (22:29), Kaitlyn Helmka 19th (23:02) and Rachael Savela 24th (23:23).

Wolverine, Onaway take home trophies

Wolverine and Onaway captured titles at the Central Lake Invitational.

Wolverine won the boys crown with 48 points. Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart was second with 79 and Onaway third with 84.

Wolverine was led by Jeremy Egas, who finished second (16:13.3). Teammates Luke Operhall came in fifth (16:48.9), Eric Purgiel 10th (18:00.3), Tim Ward 12th (18:12.8) and Aaron Jaroche 26th (18:59.2).

Ellsworth's Ashton Fisher was the overall winner (16:07). Sacred Heart's Michael Schulte took third (16:27.4) and Onaway's Lain Veihl fourth (16:43.2).

Onaway claimed the girls rae with 62 points. North Central was second (68) and Ellsworth third (75).

Allie Jo Nave placed seventh (21:05), Hayley O'Meara eighth (21:12.6) and Paula Pehkeonen 11th (21:26.2) to spark Onaway.

Sacred Heart's Bridget Bennett finished first (19:01.9). She was followed by North Central's Katie Granquist (19:41.5).

Frankfort's Keeton Spencley finished fourth (20:27.4) and Buckley's Haley Morairty fifth (20:44.3).

  • Central runner heads to Northwestern

    When Katie Perkins was narrowing down her college search, it really came down to one school. Luckily, it's the same school she will be attending next fall. Perkins, a track and cross country standout at TC Central, will run at Northwestern.
