ELK RAPIDS -- So much for jogging.
Coming back from an injury, Benzie Central's Devyn Ramsay was supposed to take it easy at Saturday's Elk Rapids Invitational.
Ramsay nearly won it.
Benzie Central went 1-2-3 to easily win the girls title at the meet with 23 points. Gaylord was second with 74 points followed by TC West (81), Elk Rapids (109) and Harbor Springs (111).
Michaela Carnegie was the top finisher in 19:06.1, just a second ahead of Ramsay.
"I couldn't believe it," Benzie Central coach Pete Moss said of seeing Ramsay lead for most of the race. "Talk about trying to get back in the ball game."
Benzie's Taylor Nye was third in 19:20.9. Theresa Warsecke was sixth (19:31.5) and Marika Grabowski 11th (19:58.2) to round out the scoring for the Huskies.
TC West had five in the top 21 with Marcy Marek (ninth, 19:49), Hannah Rickard (12th, 20:00), Clancey Hawke (19th, 20:24), Paige Richards (20th, 20:28) and Kaylee VanDommelen (21st, 20:28).
Elk Rapids and Gaylord each had two runners in the top 10. Amanda Hammer was fourth (19:22) and Laura Bailey fifth (19:31) for the Elks while the Blue Devils were seventh and eighth with Amanda Olds (19:36) and Samantha Hunt (19:45).
TC West also had two other teams at the meet. Colleen Cronin was 50th in 22:02 to lead the TC West White team while Katherine Miller topped the Gold team with an 82nd place finish in 23:55.
In the boys race, Tec Adams of Harbor Springs won the race with a blistering time of 15:33.
Suttons Bay's Ben Wynsma was second in 16:00, which beat the 25-year-old school record of Dan Ebright by a second.
Benzie Central won the boys team competition with 47 points. Harbor Springs was second with 99 followed by TC West (103), Gaylord (105) and Elk Rapids (116).
Benzie got a 4-5-6 finish from Tom Smeltzer (16:50), William Patterson (16:52) and Talon Morris (16:59). Robert Kerby was eighth (17:09) and Nick Radionoff 24th (17:41) for the Huskies.
Charlevoix's Alex Buday was third overall in 16:35. Elk Rapids had two in the top 10 with Ryan Sundberg (seventh, 17:04) and Jim Janisse (ninth, 17:10).
Gaylord's Jayden Hesselink was 10th overall in 17:12.
Wolverine takes second in Class D state meet
Wolverine finished second in the boys Class D state championships.
Adrian Lenawee took first with 78 points. Wolverine had 112.
Wolverine was led by Luke Operhall (third in 16:07.9) and Jeremy Egas (seventh in 16:41.3).
Onaway was sixth and Ellsworth seventh. Ellsworth's Ashton Fisher was second (16:04.5).
Fowler won the girls race with 84 points.Wolverine was fifth, Onaway sixth and Ellsworth seventh. Onaway's Allie Nave placed 11th (20:29.4), Wolverine's Becky Papi 14th (20:36.8) and Ellsworth's Olivia Certa 17th (20:52.1)..
VOLLEYBALL
TC Central tops Norse, Bay City Central at tri
Host Traverse City Central won both of its matches at a triangular meet, topping Suttons Bay (22-25, 25-18, 15-11) and Bay City Central (25-21, 25-16).
Suttons Bay topped the Wolves 16-25, 25-20, 15-13 in the other match.
Laura Spencer had 15 kills and four digs and Meredith Aja 12 kills to lead TC Central (33-10-3).
Carly Beers added 37 assists, nine digs and three kills. Laura Dwyer contributed 10 kills and Rachel Stieger seven.
Maggie Walters was 18 for 18 serving with four aces, 24 kills and 13 digs for Suttons Bay (25-15-5) while Crystal Dittrich was 24 for 24 with one ace and 28 digs.
Also contributing for the Norse were Hildi Forton (14 for 14, two aces, 35 assists, 12 digs), Caleigh Lennerth (13 for 15, eight digs), Biri Luna (20 for 21, four aces, five kills, nine digs), Emily Send (10 kills, four digs) and Kelly Ruthkowski (18 for 18, 12 digs).
Kingsley reaches semifinals at Gladwin
Kingsley reached the semifinals before bowing to Bullock Creek 25-15, 25-21 in the Gladwin Invitational.
Kingsley played that match shorthanded after two starters had to leave for a band function.
The Stags (39-4-1) won their pool by beating Sault Ste. Marie 25-21, 25-14; Bullock Creek 25-21, 25-15; and Sanford-Meridan 25-14, 25-14.
Kingsley defeated Manistee in the quarterfinals 29-27, 25-17.
Coach Dave Hall's team was paced by Hannah Bach (37 kills, 17 blocks, 28 of 31 serving), Sam Zubalik (27 kills, 42 of 46 serving with six aces, 17 digs), Chelsea Edgcombe (18 kills, 29 of 31 serving, five blocks, 16 digs), Hilary Hoeflin (40 of 42 serving with seven aces, 12 digs), Mary Kaleita (15 of 15 serving, 48 assists, 10 digs), Katie Nickerson (26 of 26 serving, 16 digs) and Erica Berridge (two aces, 17 assists).
Glen Lake 0-4-1 at Gaylord Invite
Glen Lake finished 0-4-1 in the Gaylord Invitational.
The Lakers split with Gaylord 22-25, 25-24; and then lost to Gladstone 25-20, 25-18; Tawas 25-22, 25-14; Yale 25-16, 25-4; and Petoskey 25-13, 25-15.
Dani Frost (20 kills, 19 digs, 20 of 22 serving with two aces) was named to the all-tournament team. Also pacing the Lakers were Casey Hawkins (eight kills, 24 digs, five aces, 43 assists), Krissy Bush (five kills, one block, 29 digs, 36 of 38 serving with two aces) and Molly Whybrew (12 kills, 12 digs, 9 of 9 serving).
TC West JV wins its own tourney
Traverse City West JV went undefeated to win its own tournament.
In pool play, the Titans (11-3) beat St. Francis 25-20, 25-15 and Leland 25-12, 25-14.West beat Petoskey 25-18, 25-11 in the semifinals and Kingsley 25-14, 25-23 in the finals.
Laura Cizek had 14 aces, seven kills, 14 digs; Taylor Pahl 10 aces, six kills, 15 digs; Sarah VanDrie six aces, 19 digs; Aimee Dixon seven aces, eight kills, and eight digs.

Saint Ignace 34
Glen Lake 13
Visiting Saint Ignace jumped out to a 21-7 halftime lead en route to a 34-13 victory over Glen Lake.
Joey Czapek ran the ball 21 times for 86 yards while Elliott Clark added 150 all-purpose yards for the Lakers (2-6).
Tim Hubbell led the Glen Lake defense with nine tackles while John Bunek added eight.
Bunek also had one of Glen Lake's two touchdowns on a 70-yard fumble return. Nate Sneed had the other score on a sneak.

Kingsley 6
Hudson scored 19 unanswered points in the second half to beat Kingsley 33-6 in a non-conference game.
The Stags (5-3) need to beat McBain on Friday to guarantee a playoff berth.
Maurice Sims scored on a 43-yard run to account for the Stags only score. Kingsley had a first and goal just before half but could not punch it in before time expired. The Stags trailed 14-6 at the break.
Sims, who sprained an ankle, finished with 60 yards on the ground. The Stags had 148 yards rushing and 70 passing. Jake Fisher hauled in five passes for 53 yards.
Tyler Lajko led the defense with 10 tackles. Tommy Sedlacek intercepted a pass.
