One dead in East Bay plane crash

TRAVERSE CITY — One person is dead and a second is at Munson Medical Center after a small plane crashed in East Bay Township en route to Cherry Capital Airport.

Emergency responders extracted the victims by snowmobile from a densely wooded swamp about a mile southwest of Five Mile and Pinebrook roads roughly an hour after officials at the airport tower reported the downed plane around 7 p.m., officials said.

Two people were aboard the twin-engine Cessna 310 when it crashed. Authorities didn’t identify the victims but Randy Agruda, spokesman for the Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department, did confirm that one person died in the wreck and a second suffered third-degree burns

“The debris field is spread all over out there,” Agruda said.

Agruda said officials called the Federal Aviation Administration to investigate shortly after the crash.

Dozens of emergency workers were on scene and blocked several roads in the area, including Five Mile Road between Hammond and Holiday roads, Evelyn Street at Holiday Road and Pinebrook Road at Five Mile.
