Accident closes U.S. 31 in East Bay

TRAVERSE CITY -- A car that struck and cracked a power pole shut down U.S. 31 in East Bay Township for more than four hours, snarling traffic for commuters on their way home.

No one was seriously injured in the collision that occurred just before 1 p.m. Thursday at 843 Munson Avenue. Pat Parker, Chief of Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department, said a car slowed for a mail delivery truck and was struck from behind by another vehicle.

"They snapped the power pole off at the base, and it's a main distribution line," Parker said.

Officials closed the road because they were concerned the strain might bring down other poles or snap lines that carry more than 13,000 volts of electricity. Traffic was diverted through adjoining subdivisions.

As of 5:30 p.m., the road remained closed while crews from Traverse City Light and Power finished replacing the pole.

Patience may pay off for East Bay Township, which could purchase a historic, one-room schoolhouse at a big discount.

Holiday ski hill's assessed value dips

Mt. Holiday Inc. will receive about $24,000 in rebated taxes for its ski hill after its officials dropped a property tax exemption claim. East Bay Township's board this week agreed to settle with the nonprofit ski hill's operators and cut the property's disputed 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 assessed taxable value by about 35 percent.

Officials review speed limits on area roads

East Bay Township Supervisor Glen Lile admits he speeds just about every day. A new study shows he's not alone. Clous to build on land he pledged to farm

Developer Bill Clous found a cash crop for the once-forested wetlands he bulldozed in East Bay Township. And it isn't corn. Clous plans to build hundreds of subsidized senior citizen apartments, as well as a commercial development, on property he cleared and scoured and pledged to farm for a decade.

Adventure calls at summer camps
