• Dennos Museum Center K-12 Education Programs is the recipient of the Delta Kappa Gamma Phi Chapter Friend of Education Award. Diana Bolander, curator of education and interpretation, received the award. The Dennos' programs includes tours, activities to complement the tours and educational performances in conjunction with artists appearing at the Dennos Concert Series.
• The 2010 Traverse Area Debate League awards ceremony was held at Traverse City Central High School recently. Based on their performance in the 2010 debate season, which consisted of 10 league rounds, the Central High School Debate Team earned the following awards. League Team Awards: Varsity Gold, 2nd Place; Varsity Green, 2nd Place; Novice Gold, 1st Place; Novice Green, 2nd Place. League Speaker Awards: Varsity Gold — Skylar Thompson, 5th Place; Molly Tompkins, 6th Place; Clark Belanger, 7th Place; Brandon Henton, 9th Place; Varsity Green — Michael Payne, 1st Place; Caroline Smith, 4th Place; Conner Becker, 9th Place; Novice Gold — Hanna Casperson, 1st Place; Callie Chappell, 2nd Place; Clara Trippe, 4th Place; Bri Sikorski, 6th Place; Novice Green — Clare O'Kane, 1st Place; Nonie Tompkins, 4th Place; Katie Cooney, 5th Place; Elena Rothney, 10th Place.
• Traverse City Area Public Schools' Montessori at Glenn Loomis was awarded a $4,000 grant from the Joan Rajkovich McGarry Family Education Endowment Fund. Toddler Directress Linda Flynn said the funds will be used to support continued efforts to build additional gardens at the school to supplement the snack program with fresh produce; to build an outdoor harvest/cleaning station and covers for the school gardens so that planting may begin earlier in the spring; and to provide education about Farm to School initiatives and curriculum support materials. Construction has been under way since early October, with students being able to participate in and/or observe the construction.

Hickory History: Students gather stories
Ryan Ness and Molly Tompkins could have done a lot of things over their summer break. Instead, the two high school juniors spent much of their free time researching the history of Hickory Hills for a book to help celebrate the city ski area's 60th birthday next year. Their volunteer research and writing will continue through much of 2011.
