-- The following have been named Students of the Month by the Kiwanis Club of Traverse City. Emily Lint, a senior at Kingsley High School, is the daughter of Robert and Julie Lint. Sarah Arthur, a senior at Traverse City St. Francis High School, is the daughter of John Arthur and Michelle Recchia.
-- Shaun Dennis, Traverse City Area Public Schools' Transportation mechanic, received the America's Best School Bus Inspector Award for 2010 at the National Association for Pupil Transportation Conference held in Jasper, Ind.
-- Abigail Woughter, a student at Traverse City Central High School, was recently named the National Writers Series Scholarship Winner. Woughter earned the award based on a non-fiction essay she submitted to The National Writers Series last May, called "Paper Dragons." Her essay will be published in "The Dunes," northern Michigan's Literary Journal, and she will receive a $1,500 scholarship.
-- The following have been named Students of the Month by the Rotary Club of Traverse City. Trevor Painter, a senior at Traverse City West High School, is the son of Dewey and Phyllinda Painter. Jane Hinsenkamp, a senior at Traverse City West High School, is the daughter of Leonard Mankowski and Andrea Hinsenkamp.

Hickory History: Students gather stories
Ryan Ness and Molly Tompkins could have done a lot of things over their summer break. Instead, the two high school juniors spent much of their free time researching the history of Hickory Hills for a book to help celebrate the city ski area's 60th birthday next year. Their volunteer research and writing will continue through much of 2011.
