Glass returns to make presentation

LELAND -- Alisha Glass, a former student at Leland Public Schools, will return to her hometown Thursday at 7 p.m. to present "Setting in Pursuit of a Dream," hosted by the Leland Educational Foundation. The event will be held in the high school gym.

Glass, a member of the three-time NCAA Division I title champion volleyball team at Penn State, shares her journey beginning as a Leelanau youth to her current position on the U.S. Women's National Volleyball team.

All ages are welcome; there will be a question-and-answer period afterwards. Tickets are $10 each or $25 per family at the door or in advance from the Leland Public School office, Pedaling Beans Coffeehouse in Lake Leelanau, or The Front Porch of Suttons Bay. Student admission is $5 at the door or $4 in advance.

All proceeds benefit the Leland Educational Foundation, which funds enrichment programs at Leland Public School.

Carnival fundraiser at Kingsley Schools

KINGSLEY -- Kingsley Area School's Band Carnival will be held Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Kingsley Middle School.

There will be games, food, a cake walk, popcorn, cotton candy, Dynamite the Clown and a raffle running all night long with a large amount of prizes. The grand prize is a Nintendo Wii game system with controller and sports CD.

Game tickets are five for $1 in advance at any Kingsley school office or four for $1 at the door. Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5.

LIFE forum features R-E's Anderson

TRAVERSE CITY -- A lunch forum celebrating the newspaper's 150th anniversary, "The Record-Eagle -- Then, Now, and Beyond," will be held Friday from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Northwestern Michigan College University Center.

Loraine Anderson, associate editor of the Record-Eagle, has spent the last two years researching and writing a special section and stories about Traverse City history and newspapers as part of the Record-Eagle's celebration of its 150th anniversary. Explore the stories and the challenges of print media from the founding of the Grand Traverse Herald in 1858 to now, with a peek at what might be next. Anderson will share photos from R-E archives.

Sign up now to 'Rock Your Future'

BENZONIA -- Diana Fairbanks, co-anchor at TV 7&4, is the keynote speaker for the third annual "Rock Your Future," a half-day program for high school girls beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at The Mills Community House.

The day begins with a continental breakfast, followed by the video "The Fish Philosophy." Several fun and informational mini-sessions follow, including mini-makeovers, creating a job application and mock job interviews and dressing for success. The program concludes with Fairbanks' presentation, questions and answers.

"Rock Your Future" is free to area high school girls. Space is limited to 50; reservations must be made by calling The Mills at 882-0581, or Kay Bos at (815) 953-9483.

Annual PathFUNDer set for Saturday

TRAVERSE CITY -- PathFUNDer, the annual fundraiser benefitting The Pathfinder School, will be held Saturday at the Dennos Museum.

The gala, themed "A Night at the Museum," features desserts and champagne, dance music by The Dawn Campbell Band, live and silent auctions. New this year, have dinner in downtown Traverse City at one of the following four restaurants -- Amical, Phil's on Front, Hanna Bistro, Red Ginger -- the evening of the fundraiser, and they will donate 10 percent of the bill to Pathfinder.

Join Courtade for 'Movie Madness'

TRAVERSE CITY -- Courtade Elementary School's Parent Teacher Organization will sponsor a "Morning Movie Madness" on Sunday in partnership with the State Theatre.

School families and the community are invited to watch Disney's "Toy Story 2" at 9:30 a.m. at the State Theatre, 233 E. Front St. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children. Each children's ticket includes a small popcorn and a bottled water. Advance tickets are available and all proceeds benefit Courtade's PTO.

Heritage Center displays vintage toys

TRAVERSE CITY -- A collection of vintage toys will be on display at the Grand Traverse Heritage Center March 19-21.

The event will feature vintage toys brought up from the Con Foster Museum collection, including Mickey Mouse items, wind-up toys, toy guns, dolls, pull toys, toy trains and more. Special vintage toys will be on display from private collections.

The toys will be on display Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Museum of History will also be open for visitors. Admission to the display and museum is $5 for adults and $2 for children, ages 3 and under admitted free.

Sparty visits schools for Reading Month

TRAVERSE CITY -- Sparty, the Michigan State University mascot, will attend three Traverse City schools Wednesday to help promote literacy as part of "March is Reading Month."

Sparty will be attending Willow Hill Elementary, Immaculate Conception and Holy Angels. At each school, Sparty will read and interact with the students to show the importance of education and reading. Call (517) 355-4458.

Wings of Wonder presents raptors

CHARLEVOIX -- Wings of Wonder presents "The Wonders of Raptors" at the Charlevoix Public Library Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Live raptors will be at the program, allowing the opportunity for a close-up look at the birds.

Competition to help state's economy

SOUTHFIELD -- Information Technology solutions company CIBER Inc. is leading an initiative called Motivate Michigan, a collegiate competition to uncover creative ideas to help improve the state's economy.

Teams and individual students can submit ideas online at www.motivatemichigan.org. The deadline for submissions is March 12.

Ideas will be judged on creativity, originality, practicality and the potential economic impact to the state. The winning idea will be developed into a project plan and presented to the logical "Project Owner" for funding and support.
