-- Shawn Miller of Traverse City was one of 14 Alma College students who participated in building Habitat for Humanity homes in Punta Gorda, Fla., in January as part of the college's alternative break program. A 2005 graduate of St. Francis High School, he is the son of Edward and Roseanne Miller of Traverse City. Shawn, a senior, is majoring in chemistry at Alma College.
-- St. Mary of Lake Leelanau students raised more than $2,200 for Heifer International. The students have chosen to purchase a heifer, four water buffalo, two beehives, two trios of rabbits, three flocks of chicks, a flock of geese, a flock of ducks and two shares of a "Joy to the World" collection (two sheep, a heifer, four goats and two llamas).
-- The eighth through 12th grades at St. Mary of Lake Leelanau again donated a portion of their day to help sew Blankets of Hope. Eighty blankets were made in this day-long project to help keep children warm around the world. In addition, students in grades K-7 donated small stuffed animals. Each blanket will be wrapped around an animal and tied with a ribbon to create a "Bundle of Love."
-- The senior class at St. Mary of Lake Leelanau teamed up with the eighth-grade class to lead a project called Pennies from Heaven. Each class held a coin collection for one week to fund health kits to be sent to Haiti. Nearly $800 was raised, with the second-grade class collecting the most change with $169. Kits contained a washcloth, a hand towel, a nail file or clippers, soap, six Band-Aids, a comb and a toothbrush.
