Drama students stage fairy tale
TRAVERSE CITY -- Drama students at West Senior High School will stage a production based on the classic tale of "Thumbelina" by Hans Christian Andersen.
The play will open at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and at 3 p.m. Saturday at the school, 5376 N. Long Lake Road.

Fundraiser supplies 'Backpacks for Kids'
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse Bay Sunrise Rotary Club will hold a Shoe & Snacks for Backpacks fundraiser Feb. 21 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Timber Ridge Resort.
The $15 registration fee will sponsor one fully supplied backpack for the 2010 "Backpacks for Kids" program. Participants can snowshoe and there will be hot beverages and snacks.
Limited onsite rentals ($5 per pair) are available from event partner GT Cycle.
Advance registration is encouraged. This is a family friendly event with a maximum registration fee of $25.

Challenge your brain at local museum
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Great Lakes Children's Museum and the Traverse Health Clinic have partnered for a Brainstorm Challenge Day Monday.
From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. activities at the museum will focus on teeth of all kinds. There will be skits, free tooth care kits and free dental screenings for children. Activities are included in museum admission of $6 for ages 2 and older and are geared toward children ages 5 and older. Younger children will need adult help.

Central debate team does well in tourney
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse City Central High School debate team reached the quarterfinals at the recent Junior Varsity State Tournament.
Four teams from Central entered and finished with a 4-1 record.
Kevin Query, a first-year debater, won a first-place speaker award.
Other final standings were: Dylan Cooper and Katie Stanton, semifinalists; Mike Payne and Kevin Query, semifinalists; Clark Belanger and Gracie Fitzsimons, quarterfinalists; and Evan Cover and Kevin Tripper, quarterfinalists.
Other speaker awards went to Gracie Fitzsimons, eighth place, and Katie Stanton, ninth place. Carol Roehrich coaches the team.
Follies to fund Northport Promise
NORTHPORT -- The Northport Promise is putting on a Follies show Saturday at 7 p.m. at Northport Community Arts Center that will have about 15 acts from serious to silly.
There will be skits, singing, instrumentals, dance and pictures and videos of previous Follies performances.
There also will be a silent auction in the lobby. Snacks and appetizers will be served following the performance as part of Edward Perez's senior project as a second-year culinary arts student at the TBA Career-Tech Center.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for ages 12-18 and free for children 12 and under.

Power Chord Academy adds sites
TRAVERSE CITY -- Power Chord Academy, the summer camp for amateur and preprofessional musician training for ages 12-18, has added new locations for this summer.
There are six new cities -- Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Houston and St. Louis -- added to the existing 11 cities.
Power Chord lets students record a single with a producer, shoot a music video and perform concerts.

NMC's Affairs Forum continues
TRAVERSE CITY -- "Why the Arctic Matters," is the topic of an International Affairs Forum by Mead Treadwell, chair of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission, Feb. 18 at Milliken Auditorium at Dennos Museum Center.
A 30-year resident of Alaska, Treadwell has worked in business, government and academia, establishing a broad range of research programs in technology, ecology, social science and policy.
All programs begin with a reception in the Sculpture Court of the Dennos Museum Center at 5:15 p.m., followed at 6 p.m. by the lecture and a discussion period. Tickets are $10 each.

TRAVERSE CITY -- The YMCA Child Care Center will celebrate its first anniversary with an open house.

Scholarship deadline is March 31
INTERLOCHEN -- The deadline to apply for the Annette Basler Memorial Scholarship is March 31.
Two scholarships for $1,000 each are offered through the Interlochen Area Chamber of Commerce.
Applicants must be a graduating high school senior who attended at least one year at Interlochen Community School and who will be continuing his or her education after graduation.
Application forms are available at high school guidance departments or from the Interlochen Community School.
'Disney & Desserts' has songs, sweets
TRAVERSE CITY -- Dessert and Disney will be served by the Traverse City Central Chorale.
Student entertainers will perform Disney favorites and children are encouraged to dress as their favorite Disney characters. Photos are encouraged.
A dessert reception after the show will feature cakes, pies and sweets.
"Disney & Desserts" will be at Faith Reformed Church, 1139 E. Front St., at 7 p.m. Feb. 18 and 19 and 2 p.m. Feb. 20. Tickets are $8 and are available at the TC Central box office, 933-3573.
Photographer hosting contest
ALANSON -- Northern Michigan photographer Tony Hogrefe has started a photo contest with a prize of a senior photo package.
High school juniors and seniors who don't have their portraits done yet can enter a photo, digital or print. There must be a minimum of three photos entered from a school. Non-winning entrants will get a discount on senior picturs.
