• Consumers Energy recently presented Benzie County Central Schools with a rebate check for $55,695 under the utility's energy-efficiency program, part of Michigan's new energy-reform law. Benzie Central received the rebates for lighting upgrades at several locations in the district. The upgrades — including replacement of compact fluorescent fixtures, linear T12 to T8 fluorescent retrofits, and exit-sign retrofits with LED technology — will save the district an estimated $88,200 annually.
• Several local families have been selected to host international exchange students through Youth For Understanding USA. The Peter and Laurene Kallioinen family, of Traverse City, will host Charlotte Maria Hilliger, of Germany, who will attend Traverse City West High School. The Charles and Lisa Donaldson family, of Traverse City, will host Yuri Furukawa, of Japan. He also will attend Traverse City West High School. The Mamie Borchet family, of Traverse City, will host Jan Lennart Korn, of Germany. He also will attend West High School. The Christopher Lee and Margaret Lajako-Lee family, of Kingsley, will host Marius Andre Tartler, of Germany. He will attend Kingsley High School. The Daniel and Pamela Kaiser family, of Traverse City, will host Malte Zaumseil, of Germany. He also will attend West High School. All students will be in the area for the full academic year.
• A North Central Michigan College-based writing project has received a $5,000 grant to help area teachers build stronger classroom cultural awareness and sensitivity in rural Michigan. The funding for the Michigan State University Red Cedar National Writing Project's Top-of-the Mitt Satellite comes from the Rural Sites Network of the National Writing Project. Toby Kahn-Loftus, TOTM satellite director, applied for the grant with Dan Polleys, project leader and Boyne City Middle School teacher, and Ken Winter, TOTM community liaison and North Central Michigan College adjunct journalism and political science instructor.

Hickory History: Students gather stories
Ryan Ness and Molly Tompkins could have done a lot of things over their summer break. Instead, the two high school juniors spent much of their free time researching the history of Hickory Hills for a book to help celebrate the city ski area's 60th birthday next year. Their volunteer research and writing will continue through much of 2011.
