ISD teacher is Mich. Educator of the Year

TRAVERSE CITY -- Kathie Scott, a 24-year veteran of the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District, is co-recipient of the VSA arts of Michigan Educator of the Year for 2010.

Scott, who currently teaches at Traverse Heights elementary, began her career as a nurse. She has taken courses at 14 colleges and universities and eventually began blending nursing and education. "I love taking classes," Scott said. "I take classes like other people play golf."

VSA arts gives people with disabilities access to the arts. Scott, who teaches children with physical and other health impairments, has her students participate in art events and festivals, including making handmade holiday cards and hosting artists-in-residence.

Scott is retiring this spring.
