When 'School's Out,' kids go to YMCA

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Grand Traverse Bay YMCA will offer the School's Out Program Wednesday from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the main facility, 3000 Racquet Club Drive, just south of South Airport Road in Traverse City.

The program is for children ages 5-12.

Other daylong sessions will be March 26 and April 5; "Spring Break Camp" will be held March 29-April 2.

Annual dinner benefits 'Promise'

NORTHPORT -- Members of the Northport Public School Honor Society have chosen the Northport Promise as the beneficiary of their annual fundraising dinner, scheduled from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Northport School.

Students and members of the Northport Promise steering committee will prepare and serve a pasta dinner. Take-out is available. Hugh Willey and several students will provide entertainment.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children, available from NHS members; Liz Lint at 386-5153; the Northport School office; The Filling Station; Fischer's Happy Hour Tavern; or at the door.

Students offered summer internships

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation is accepting applications from area students interested in a paid internship opportunity this summer with an area nonprofit organization.

More than 25 organizations in the region have indicated interest in hosting a student intern. Job descriptions are posted at www.4good4ever.org.

Internships are primarily intended for residents of Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska or Leelanau counties that are attending, or have graduated in 2010 from a high school in the region.

Community forum on education set

TRAVERSE CITY -- A community forum focusing on young children and Michigan's budget priorities will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the TBA-ISD Conference Center in Traverse City.

There will be a panel of early childhood experts, businesspeople and community leaders. The forum is is free and no registration is required.

The Northern Michigan Parent Leadership Conference, a half-day conference with author and early childhood advocate Dan Hodgins, will also be held Saturday. Hodgins will present two workshops on parenting. The conference is free, but attendees must register in advance by calling Child Care Connections at (800) 968-4228.

Spring Educator Week at Borders

TRAVERSE CITY -- Borders stores throughout Michigan will honor educators discounts March 19-27.

Retired and current teachers, librarians, homeschoolers, student teachers, professors and other instructors get a 30 percent discount off the list price of all books, CDs, DVDs, gifts, stationery and more.

There will also be in-store events, raffles, prizes, networking opportunities, and a chance to win Borders gift cards for schools.

Fest raises funds for Boots for Kids

TRAVERSE CITY -- A Family Fun Fest will take place March 21 from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Wilderness Crossing complex south of Traverse City.

The event will feature six live bands, a silent auction, raffle, face painting, a juggler, a cartoonist, balloons and more. Food and beverages will be for sale.

Admission is $5 per person at the door and $4 per person if purchasing 10 or more tickets at www.wildernesscrossing.com.

Family Fun Fest will raise funds and awareness for Boots for Kids, a local nonprofit organization. Contributions may be directed to Boots for Kids, P.O. Box 179, Traverse City, MI 49684. For details, e-mail bootsforkids@yahoo.com.

DKG membership drive launched

TRAVERSE cITY -- The local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma's "Join DKG -- Be In Good Company" spring membership drive will be held March 22 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Traverse Area District Library.

Phi Chapter members will be available in the second floor Study Room to explain the purposes and activities of the society and chapter. DKG is an international society of women educators whose mission is to promote professional and personal growth of women educators, current or retired. Kindergarten sessions set at GTA

TRAVERSE CITY -- Grand Traverse Academy will offer several options for kindergarten students for the 2010-11 school year, including a new full-day alternative.

Kindergarten information meetings to discuss curriculum and scheduling will take place March 22 from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. and March 24 from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. in the Comstock Lecture Hall, located inside the north entrance of the school.

Enrollment information packets are available in the elementary office, located inside the south entrance.

'Jazz 'n' Joes' fundraiser for GTA

TRAVERSE CITY -- Grand Traverse Academy's fourth annual "Jazz 'n' Joes" dinner and music fundraiser will be held March 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the school's big gymnasium.

Ninety-seven band members will perform throughout the evening, starting with the Junior High Cadet Band at 5:15 p.m., continuing with the Varsity Band at 5:45 and ending with the Symphonic Band at 6:15. The bands will play favorites from the Swing Era.

The sloppy joe dinner can be eaten during the performance or will be available as take-out.

Proceeds will go toward the expansion of the band room rehearsal space. The cost is $4 per person; tickets are available from any Grand Traverse Academy junior high or high school band member, or in the school office at 1245 Hammond Road E., Traverse City.

Kenya Safari Acrobats at NMC

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Kenya Safari Acrobats will be appearing March 23 at Northwestern Michigan College in a free presentation sponsored by the Student Life office.

With origins as a group of family performers, the troupe now consists of six to eight athletes performing fire ring jumping, human pyramid, magic, feats of strength and a short lesson in Swahili.

The show will be at 7 p.m. in Milliken Auditorium.

Though free, advance tickets are necessary and are available at the Office of Student Life in West Hall, at the front desk of the Dennos Museum Center, at Horizon Books in Traverse City and Oryana Food Co-op.

'Transform 2010' fundraiser at TCC

TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City Christian Schools will hold Transform 2010, a scholarship fundraiser with Joseph Stowell as the keynote speaker on March 25.

Stowell serves on the board of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and is president of Cornerstone University.

Transform 2010 begins at 6:15 p.m. with hors d'oeuvres and light refreshments, followed by the program. Tickets are $9 in advance and $12 at the door. Group discounts are available. All proceeds benefit Traverse City Christian Schools' Scholarship Fund. To reserve a seat, call 929-1747, ext 127.

CAC offers sexual abuse prevention

TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse Bay Children's Advocacy Center of Grand Traverse and Leelanau County presents "Darkness to Light; Stewards of Children," seven steps to protecting children from sexual abuse.

The 21/2-hour program is designed to educate adults to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse and is conducted by a facilitator at schools, places of business, or the Children's Advocacy Center, to groups as small as 10 people.

Zonta seeks 'Young Women in Science'

GAYLORD -- The Zonta Club of Gaylord is seeking scholarship applicants for the 2010 Young Women in Science excursion aboard the schooner Inland Seas through the Inland Seas Education Association.

The scholarship is open to female students currently in grades 9-11 with an interest in science, a willingness to be an active participant in hands-on learning, previous outdoor education experience, such as camping, and an interest or experience in sailing or boating.
