BBQ ticket eligible for scholarship
TRAVERSE CITY -- Ticket-buyers to the Northwestern Michigan College Barbecue will again have a chance to win a two-year scholarship.
The winner will be drawn from all entrants on the day of the barbecue, May 16.
Tickets go on sale Saturday and cost $5 in advance and $6 the day of. A kickoff event will be held at the Grand Traverse Mall from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be children's games, an obstacle course, prizes and an appearance by "Chip," the life-size faux buffalo.
The scholarship is offered by the NMC Foundation, is good for 10 years after the drawing and can be used by anyone the winner chooses.

Young women sought for award
TRAVERSE CITY -- Zonta of Traverse City and the Zonta Club of Leelanau County are accepting applications for the Young Women in Public Affairs program.
The program is designed to encourage young women, ages 16 to 20, to participate in public and political life. Applicants will be asked to show commitment to volunteering and to reflect on problems limiting women.
The Traverse City club will award $750 and submit the winner's application to Zonta International. The Leelanau Club offers a $1,000 scholarship.
The deadline for the Traverse City award is March 23. Leelanau County high school seniors have a deadline of March 19.

Art program for middle school kids
Traverse City -- Students in grades six through eight are invited to take part in "An Art Affair" in March hosted by the Traverse Area District Library's Youth Services Department.
The free art program will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. in the McGuire Community Room at the library, 610 Woodmere Ave. Topics and dates are: Manga Art, March 14; Origami, March 21; and Caricatures, March 28.

NMC offering solar energy courses
TRAVERSE CITY -- Northwestern Michigan College is offering solar-energy training courses.
Solar Photovoltaic Hands-on Systems Training Solar training provides technical skills for electricians and those who have passed the NABCEP Entry Level exam. It is a one-week intensive course, scheduled for Feb. 22-26.
Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Electric Systems -- NABCEP Entry Level provides the fundamentals of PV system design in a one-week workshop, March 15-19.

Women educators meeting at Stella
TRAVERSE CITY -- Delta Kappa Gamma, Phi Chapter, a group for women educators currently teaching or retired, is holding a winter get-together.
The group will meet at noon Saturday at Stella Trattoria in Building 50 at the Village at Grand Traverse Commons.

Leelanau talent
is in the spotlight
LELAND -- A program Saturday showcases Leelanau County students.
"Showcase Leelanau" will be presented at 6:30 p.m. at the Old Art Building, 111 Main St., Leland. Admission is free.
The event is designed to highlight the fine arts programs in the county schools, and will feature musical performances and student art work from students at Glen Lake, Leland, Northport, St. Mary's and Suttons Bay. There will also be an unveiling of a collaborative piece by area students.
Volunteers needed for review board
TRAVERSE CITY -- The State Court Administrative Office of the Michigan Supreme Court is seeking volunteers to serve on a 10-county foster care review board panel.
The selection process includes interviews and background checks, and each volunteer selected must attend a two-day orientation training in Lansing April 22-23. Thereafter, all board members attend an annual two-day training conference, which is held in early November. Expenses for training are reimbursed.

Johnson Foundation seeking applicants
BENZONIA -- The Paul T. and Frances B. Johnson Foundation is accepting 2010-11 scholarship applicants from Benzie, Leelanau and Grand Traverse counties. Students who have been residents for at least three of four of high school years (grades 9-12) are eligible.
The foundation may award both scholarships and honoraria, though there is no guarantee that an applicant will receive an award. Applications are available at local high school counselors offices or by contacting the foundation at 787 Michigan Ave., P.O. Box 203, Benzonia, MI 49616-0203. The deadline to apply is May 1.
KidzArt offers Spring Break camp
TRAVERSE CITY -- Registration is now open for the "Around the World" Camp at the KidzArt studio in the Cherryland Center.
This camp is for boys and girls ages 6 and over who love to draw and do projects. Chinese lanterns, nesting dolls, mandalas and limoge boxes are planned.

NMC Music Dept. hosts campus visit
TRAVERSE CITY -- There will be a campus visitation day at Northwestern Michigan College for high school seniors interested in studying music.
Events will run from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 24 and will include a campus tour, visits to music classes, an orientation to college coursework in music, the application process, a student recital program and specific information about being accepted as music major at the collegiate level.
