n Jamie L. Schaub, of Traverse City, recently received a scholarship from Women In Defense Michigan Chapter at the organization's recent Black Tie Gala. Schaub was one of six women to receive the scholarship. Schaub is an undergraduate student at Kalamazoo College, majoring in psychology. WID is a networking and development organization for those who contribute to the national defense and security professions.
n Traverse City West Senior High School Administrative Assistant Krista Gusler has been awarded the Michigan Institute for Educational Management Crystal Award in the Customer Service category. The award recognizes and celebrates the outstanding performance, achievements and contributions of individuals who work in support staff positions within Michigan school districts.
n Traverse City Central High School Debaters took top speaker honors in Varsity and Novice divisions at the Dexter Delight Debate Tournament recently. Dylan Cooper earned varsity speaker #1 and Clara Trippe took Novice speaker #1. Other awards included Kevin Trippe, Varsity speaker #9; Katie Stanton, Varsity speaker #8; Emily Cain, Novice speaker #10; Callie Chappell, Novice speaker #8; Samantha Donohue, Novice speaker #6.
n Danny Rothschild, 16, of Interlochen, is one of 10 winners in the 2010 Young Playwrights Inc. His play, "A Ninth Time," will have off-Broadway staged readings at the Cherry Lane Theater in New York Jan. 10-12. Rothschild will attend the Young Playwrights Conference Jan. 5-13 to workshop the play.

Hickory History: Students gather stories
Ryan Ness and Molly Tompkins could have done a lot of things over their summer break. Instead, the two high school juniors spent much of their free time researching the history of Hickory Hills for a book to help celebrate the city ski area's 60th birthday next year.
