Book fair benefits Leelanau schools

SUTTONS BAY -- A book fair at Brilliant Books of Suttons Bay will benefit five Leelanau County schools.

From Nov. 1 to 7, shoppers can choose to give 20 percent of the sales to Suttons Bay, Leland, Northport, Glen Lake or St. Mary's schools.

GTACS offers annual 'Stag Steak Fry'

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Annual Grand Traverse Area Public Schools Athletic "Stag Steak Fry" will be held at 6 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 13424 W. Bayshore Dr. in Traverse City.

Meet members of the GTACS athletic teams, including the varsity girls basketball coach Bill Bayer and the boys varsity coach Dave Ginsberg. Register early by calling 946-1180. Cost is $20 per person; must be 21 or older or be accompanied by an adult.

GTARSP set luncheon meeting

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Grand Traverse Area Retired School Personnel will have a luncheon meeting at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Holiday Inn on E. Front Street.

The program will be "I did not know that," sharing facts from long ago. The cost of $12 includes meal and gratuity. Reservations, due by Nov. 5, are required and binding unless canceled. If not on a caller list, call Linda Czajka at 932-7393.

Fashion Show is Zonta fundraiser

PETOSKEY -- The Petoskey chapter of Zonta International will hold a fashion show fundraiser, "An Abundance of Giving," Nov. 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bay View Inn.

The event will highlight fall and winter fashions from 18 retailers, a silent auction, gift basket raffle, lunch and a live auction for a "Queen for a Day" spa package.

NCMC to honor three at luncheon

PETOSKEY -- North Central Michigan College will honor three longtime supporters of the college at a special luncheon at 11:45 a.m. today in the library on the Petoskey campus.

Ann Irish and W. Richard Smith of Harbor Springs and John Linck of Petoskey will receive a Founders Society Award honoring their dedication to the college and the NCMC Foundation, and for their significant positive impact on the growth and development of the college.

CTC fights hunger with 'Harvest'

TRAVERSE CITY -- Students from the TBA-ISD Career-Tech Center's Agriscience program will team up with Traverse City Tractor Supply to help fight hunger in the region on Nov. 7.

As a part of the "Harvest for America" event, CTC students are participating in a community outreach campaign of the National Future Farmers of America Alumni Association, sponsored in part by Tractor Supply Company. All goods and other non-perishable food items collected will be donated to local food banks.

Cherry Festival looking for interns

TRAVERSE CITY -- The National Cherry Festival is looking for interns for the 2010 festival season.

There are seven openings including operations and volunteer management, office administration and event planning, and banking and finance. Six of the positions begin Jan. 1; banking and finance begins May 1.

Applicants must be enrolled at an accredited college or university and be in good academic standing. Applications, qualifications and responsibilities are available at www.cherryfestival.org.

Deadline nearing for GirlTECH event

TRAVERSE CITY -- Tenth-grade girls should sign up by Nov. 4 for the upcoming GirlTECH day.

The event, now in its eighth year, is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at Northwestern Michigan College's Great Lakes Campus. It was developed to encourage girls to consider non-traditional careers.

Organizers expect 200 students to attend. There are five breakout sessions and local speakers talking about careers in everything from funeral directing to law enforcement. The keynote speaker is Maxine Lauer, founder of Sphere Trending, a consulting firm that studies consumer preferences and trends.

Students can enter PSAs in contest

BYRON CENTER -- A competition for student filmmakers has a deadline of Feb. 15.

The Great Choices Student Film Festival wants 30-second public service announcements in the categories of Character Education, Healthy Lifestyles and/or Celebrating Diversity. There are two audiences to target -- K-6 and 7-12.

Prizes in each category range from a $500 gift certificate to a $2,000 gift certificate to Meijer, Apple or Dell. There will be 18 first-, second- and third-place winners.
