Students meet with Stratford actors

TRAVERSE CITY -- Area students will work with actors from North America's largest classical repertory theater today.

The Stratford Shakespeare Festival teaching and performing residency program will work with students from the Interlochen Arts Academy, Traverse City Christian School, Traverse City College Prep Academy, West Senior High School, Leland Public School, Benzie County Central Public School, West Middle School, St. Francis, Northwestern Michigan College and the Old Town Playhouse.

Local students perform in musical

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Two Central Michigan University students from Traverse City will participate in the University Theatre production of "The Secret Garden."

Sophomore Rose Kranick, daughter of Harold and Cecilia and a graduate of St. Francis High School, will play Mrs. Shelley in the production.

Sophomore Eric Ranke will play Lt. Shaw. He is the son of Jeff and Dione Ranke and a graduate of Traverse City West Senior High School. For information on tickets, go to http://centralboxoffice.cmich.edu.

Occidentalist hosts arts and crafts show

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse City West Senior High School student newspaper, The Occidentalist, will host an arts and crafts show and used book sale Nov. 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Commons Area.

Booth rentals are available for vendors. Booths are 8-feet-by-10-feet and cost $50. For a vendor registration form, visit www.tcaps.net/wsh and go to the school newspaper page.

All proceeds benefit the West Senior High School student newspaper.

Area shoebox packing parties set

TRAVERSE CITY -- Operation Christmas Child Northern Michigan is preparing for the upcoming shoebox packing parties on Nov. 7. The goal is to pack 10,000 boxes in one day.

Packing parties will be held at Traverse City Christian School, Grace Community Church in Central Lake, Otsego Christian Church in Gaylord and Lighthouse Missionary Church in East Jordan.

Shoeboxes (standard size) pre-filled with any combination of items, such as personal hygiene items, toys, school supplies, sunglasses, shoes, jewelry or gum, are welcome.

In addition, a $7 donation to Samaritan's Purse for shipping for the box is encouraged.

Volunteer participants and donations are still needed.

Paperworks offers new holiday cards

TRAVERSE CITY -- Through their work at Paperworks Studio, 17 local disabled and disadvantaged artisans are selling four new holiday greeting cards and the opportunity for businesses to customize cards for business and clients.

This year's designs offer a variety of card types and sentiments, all made from recycled materials.

Not only are the cards unique and beautiful, they are available with the standard holiday greeting, customized sentiment or with a business logo.

Volunteers sought for 'Good Cheer'

TRAVERSE CITY -- Operation Good Cheer is seeking volunteers Dec. 4 and 5 to help wrap and ship Christmas gifts for children, youth and adults with disabilities.

The program is an annual all-volunteer Christmas gift-giving program, sponsored and coordinated by Child and Family Services of Michigan Inc. Operation Good Cheer focuses on children, youth and adults with disabilities, who currently reside in out-of-home placement facilities.

Each year thousands of volunteers, individuals and companies come together to purchase and wrap gifts from an individual child's "Wish List," which includes a personal profile of the child along with six gift choices they would appreciate.

4-H begins new grant cycle

TRAVERSE CITY -- Grand Traverse County 4-H will begin a new round of competitive grants to encourage development of age-appropriate educational 4-H programs in Grand Traverse County.

Grand Traverse County 4-H adult and youth volunteers, community groups, schools or others who would like to create or expand 4-H Volunteer and Youth Development programs, events or activities are eligible to apply.

Financial support for the distribution of grant dollars is made available through the 4-H participation fee paid by club youth and their families.

Grant applications are due Nov. 16. Grant recipients will be announced Dec. 16.

NMC offers ACT prep courses

TRAVERSE CITY -- Northwestern Michigan College is offering classes for ACT Test Preparation for high school juniors and seniors planning on taking the test in December.

Students may take a "diagnostic" course offered on Mondays, Nov. 9-Dec. 7. A "basic" version is offered Mondays, Nov. 16 to Dec. 7.

Both meet from 6 to 9 p.m.

The basic course costs $229; the diagnostic course is $259 and includes a full-length pre-test.
