Series highlights anxiety disorders
TRAVERSE CITY -- Northern Michigan Psychiatric Services will present "Anxiety Disorders in Children and Adolescents" today from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Traverse City Central High School Library Media Center.

NMC hosts its annual "Drag Race"
TRAVERSE CITY -- Northwestern Michigan College's Residence Hall Council presents "NMC's Drag Race" Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Milliken Auditorium at the Dennos Museum Center.
The event will include a variety of acts, including both male and female impersonators.
Tickets in advance are $4 for students, $5 for non-students, available in the Student Life Office and at Oryana Natural Foods Market; or $10 at the door.
Brunch benefits CHS orchestras
TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City Central High School's orchestras will benefit from a brunch hosted by Scott's Harbor Grill from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.
The cost is $15 for adults and $7 for children under 10. Live music will be provided by orchestra students. Proceeds will helpr students with travel to state and national conferences later this year.

TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City West Middle School will host a Senior Citizen Social Dec. 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the school cafeterias.

'Bid for Hope' auction under way
TRAVERSE CITY -- An Internet auction to benefit the House of Hope is under way through Dec. 7.
The auction features Internet services, gift certificates, golf outings, artwork and quilts. All proceeds benefit The House of Hope, a residential program near Traverse City that helps heal troubled teens and their families.

Spring registration open at WSCC
SCOTTVILLE -- Registration for spring semester classes that begin Jan. 11 at West Shore Community College is open to returning and new students.
Students seeking financial aid must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, available at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Those with questions about the financial aid process can call the Financial Aid office at 843-5924.

Mensa offers scholarships
TRAVERSE CITY -- Northern Michigan Mensa, the local chapter of Mensa, is offering an essay contest for scholarship awards of $300 to $1,000 to residents who will be enrolled in an accredited U. S. institution of post-secondary education for fall term of 2010.

Feedback wanted on children's report
TRAVERSE CITY -- Feedback is wanted on a report about the status of infants and young children in the six-county region.
The report, by Great Start Traverse City/Manistee, summarizes conditions children face in Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau and Manistee counties.
It focuses on physical health, emotional health, education, parenting and family support.
The report is available at www.tbgreatstart.org. Read it there, then comment in the online discussion. There's also a survey at the site.
Youth in Gov't works to pass laws
TRAVERSE CITY -- Youth in Government is being offered through the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA.
The program is the second largest youth legislative program in the U.S. Participants submit a bill and work to get it passed. All bills that pass into "law" by the youth governor are then presented to the real Michigan legislature.
The bottle deposit law and pictures on drivers licenses began as student laws.
Youth in Government is open to students in grades nine through 12.
The program requires a one-day conference (Jan. 9, 2010) and a one-week spring conference with a registration fee of $385.
