The following have been named Students of the Month by the Kiwanis Club of Traverse City.
- Adela Fedorova, a senior at Traverse City Central High School, is the daughter of Peter Fedor and Ivana Fedorova. She has served as co-president of National Honor Society and as a member of the varsity debate team. She has participated in varsity tennis (No. 3 singles), the sailing team, downhill skiing, FIRST Robotics and Youth in Government. Adela has received a National Merit Scholarship (Commended Scholars), varsity academic letters, was a poster presenter at the World Glaucoma Congress in Boston, and was the sole student member of the NASA Spitzer Project. Adela enjoys reading, drawing, spending time with family and friends and snowboarding. Although undecided on a school, she plans to study either medicine or international relations.
- Spencer Thompson, a senior at Traverse City Central High School, is the son of Robert and Patricia Thompson. He has served as vice president of the Freshman Student Council; captain of the Debate Team; member of National Honor Society; and as a peer tutor in algebra and calculus. He has participated in the SCI-MA-TECH program, symphony band, percussion ensemble, drumline section (leader), Youth in Government, ROV Underwater Robotics Team and the Michigan Math Challenge. A National Merit Commended Scholar, Spencer was the winner of the Northern Michigan Science Symposium, the Optimist Club oratory contest and the TC Economic Club essay contest. He has received the TBA-ISD Math, Science and Technology award, President's Education award and was named the Youth in Government Outstanding Prosecuting Attorney. Spencer enjoys music (performance and composition), percussion and piano, reading, languages, downhill skiing, swimming, cooking and movies. He plans to attend a small liberal arts college and pursue a career in medicine.
- Jonathan Buday, a senior at St. Francis Catholic High School, is the son of Christopher and Lynne Buday. He has served as vice president of Student Government, captain of the varsity football team; member of National Honor Society; and as a volunteer for Gladhander, Glad Meals, Goodwill and the Father Fred Foundation. He has also volunteered to raise awareness and money for Munson's Breast Cancer Fund; as a student mentor; and at the Kalkaska County Rotary Club. Jonathan received the Varsity Football All-Conference Athletic and Academic Award 2008, Varsity Football All-Conference Honorable Mention 2008 and Record-Eagle Dream Team Offensive Lineman and Most Valuable Defensive Lineman 2008. He plans to attend college and obtain a mechanical engineering degree.
- Marc Kanitz, a senior at St. Francis Catholic High School, is the son of Mike and Marcy Kanitz. He has served as playoff captain of the varsity football team; retreat leader of the Kairos Retreat Team; and altar server at St. Joseph's Church. He has participated in football, basketball and track, and sings in the choir during weekly school Mass. Marc was a member of the 2008 Div. 7 state championship football team and the 2009 Div. 4 MITCA state championship men's track team. He enjoys attending school and has only missed 3-4 days in his high school career.
