• Steven Tate, of Traverse City, was one of five winners to receive Lamar Advertising Co.'s President's Scholarship. A 2009 graduate of Traverse City Central High School, he is the son of Dora Tate, office manager at Lamar's Traverse City office. Steven is majoring in mechanical engineering at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City.

• Northern Michigan Mensa holds an essay competition every year for high school seniors to award three financial scholarships. The winners are determined by Margaret Scott of Fife Lake, Mensa's scholarship chairperson. This year's winners are Catherine M. Gammon, Petoskey High School; Zoe Allen-Wickler, Suttons Bay High School; Lydia L. Belanger, Traverse City Central High School.

• Emily Kobernik, of Frankfort, recently graduated from Carelton College (Northfield, Minn.) with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. She is the daughter of Cheryl Kobernik and Alan Kobernik.

• The following local students recently graduated from Lawrence Technological University in Southfield with master's degrees in business administration: Alfred Chimoski, of Suttons Bay; Sam Niemi, of Traverse City; Laura Galbraith, of Traverse City.

• Beau James Diehl, of Traverse City, recently graduated magna cum laude from Upper Iowa University (Fayette, Iowa) with a bachelor's degree in psychology and social science.

• The grand prize winner of the 12th Annual St. Mary School Key Campaign and Car Raffle was Michelle Mikowski, of Suttons Bay. Michelle and her husband, Bernard (class of 1984), have three children who attend St. Mary School — Anna, a sophomore; Andrew, in seventh grade; and Catherine, who attends St. Mary Preschool. Michelle purchased her winning ticket before Mass the day of the drawing to help this year's raffle become another sell-out. Second prize of $1,000 cash went to Gayle Zimmerer of West Bloomfield. Gayle, who has purchased a ticket every year for the past 10 years, bought hers from school parent Sheila Schaub.
