-- Jeffrey Sailing graduated from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing recently. A graduate of Alma College and Mesick High School, he is the son of Carol and Linda Sailing.
-- Hannah Sattler has been accepted to Cottey College in Nevada, Mo. A graduate of Traverse City West High School, she is the daughter of Vonnie Tanner and Roger Sattler, both of Interlochen. Cottey is owned and supported by the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
-- Max and Monique Nickerson and family welcomed Riho Tanaka, a Youth for Understanding exchange student from Japan. She is attending Kingsley Area High School.
-- Traverse City Central High School student Anna Frick has been named as a semifinalist in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program. Frick was one of approximately 16,000 semifinalists named by officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Frick now has the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,200 National Merit Scholarships, which will be offered next spring.
-- Baker College officials have named Denise Bannan, Ph.D., to the position of system vice president for academics. Responsibilities include leading the academic division for the entire college system, ensuring student success through curriculum and program assessment, implementing enhanced learning and teaching techniques, and meeting accreditation standards. Dr. Bannan was president of Baker College of Owosso for the past 13 years.
-- Ronald McDonald House Charities of Outstate Michigan has awarded the Benzie County Baby Pantry a $10,000 grant, which will enable the pantry to expand services into Manistee County. Located on the grounds of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, the Baby Pantry has been providing supplies for children ages 0-5 for the past five years, free of charge.
-- The Northwestern Michigan College Community Band will begin its 2008-09 season Oct. 24 under the baton of new conductor John Beery.
-- Julie Doherty, a senior at St. Francis Catholic High School in Traverse City, has been named a Student of the Month by the Kiwanis Club of Traverse City. The daughter of Mike and Sue Doherty, Julie has served as vice president of the Key Club (11th grade); is a member National Honor Society; and is senior class president. She plays varsity soccer as a three-year captain and a four-year starter, and was named MVP as a sophomore and junior, as well as Div. 4 first-team All-State. She looks forward to studying journalism or international relations in college.
-- Three Hope College students from the area are studying off campus during the 2008 fall semester. Sarah J. Kibbey, a senior from Maple City, Kristin M. Kramer, a junior from Traverse City, and Megan C, Yeiter, also a junior from Traverse City, are studying in Chicago through the Chicago Metro Program. Kibbey is the daughter of Robert and Cindy Kibbey, and a 2005 Glen Lake High School graduate. Kramer, a 2006 graduate of St. Francis Catholic High School, is the daughter of Keith and Karen Kramer. Yeiter is the daughter of Curt and Christine Yeiter. She is a 2006 graduate of St. Francis High School.
-- Since 1998, Traverse City Area American Association of University Women has participated in the Women's Book Project, to distribute books featuring women and girls as the major subject. The book "Elizabeth Leads the Way -- Elizabeth Cady Stanton and the Right to Vote" by Stone and Gibbon was recently distributed to 14 elementary schools and 10 libraries in the area.
