Grand Traverse Academy has named their students of the month for October:

-- Darcy Glazier, grade 7, plans to pursue a career as a chef or photographer. She enjoys playing in the Grand Traverse Academy band and would like to learn to speak Korean. She enjoys listening to music, drawing, magic tricks, interacting with people from other countries and cooking. She volunteers with younger children at her church.

-- Damon Schopieray, grade 7, plans to attend college or a trade school. He is interested in land management and would like to learn how to train hunting dogs. He enjoys hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, camping and watching NASCAR. He is a member of Windy Acres 4-H. He also enjoys overhauling mechanical motors and is currently working on a project with his grandfather, rebuilding a 1960 Farmall Cub tractor.

-- Megan Hedger, grade 10, hopes to become a journalist and photographer. She plans to attend college and is interested in writing books. She is a science lab assistant and is responsible for sorting chemicals, organizing and planning labs, working with junior high students and performing general maintenance in the lab. She enjoys reading.

-- Byron Delancey, grade 11, plans on attending college to study towards becoming a lawyer. He would like to have a large family with at least 10 children. He enjoys reading, studying foreign languages and cultures and has a passion for learning history. He sings in the GTA choir.

-- The American flag was flown over the State Capitol in Eastern Elementary's honor for one day, and then donated to the school along with a note from Gov. Jennifer Granholm's office. The Traverse City School was nominated by Elizabeth Pirola, a parent of an Eastern student.

-- Traverse Heights Elementary School students and staff recently donated nonperishable food items that they had been collecting since Nov. 4 to the Father Fred Food Pantry.

-- Karen Shoskey of Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District participated in the Discovery Education National Training Academy in Silver Spring, Md., to learn more about using technology in the classroom.

-- Baker College Online officials announced a 7.87 percent increase in summer enrollment compared to the same period in 2007. With new student enrollment up 29.6 percent, a total of 3,249 undergraduate students attended online classes exclusively during summer quarter 2008.

-- Three members of the Kalkaska High School class of 2008 have earned AP Scholar Awards. Jessica Gunderson and John Sherrill earned AP Scholar Awards; Toran Keith earned an AP Scholar Award with Honor.

-- The following students graduated from Central Michigan University with the Summer 2008 class: Kimberly Clark of Bellaire; Jacqueline Brun of Ellsworth; Bridget Gauld of Beulah; Heather Poulisse of Lake Ann; Marcella Koss and Cassandra Moyer of Boyne City; Marilee Brooks, Heather Ferber and Geralyn McCafferty of Charlevoix; Beth Stallard of East Jordan; Joseph Duczkowski of Cheboygan; Sheri Bovin of Indian River; Stephanie Asiala and Lindsay Morris of Petoskey; Danielle Bielski, Jennifer Brammer, Melissa Brooke, Adam Dwyer, Brooke Gregory, Jesse Meilleur, Elliott Nelson, Amy Orth and Christina VanDoeselaar of Traverse City; Rachael Gaubatz of Williamsburg; Lindsey White of Maple City; Craig Beery, Hannah Bergstrom, Mary Haworth and Aaron Hotelling of Gaylord; Stephan Kwapis of Waters.

-- Two local Hope College students appeared in the cast of "Second Class," the first mainstage production of the fall semester. Seth Hoard, freshman, is the son of Marc and Julia Hoard of Traverse City. Margaret McGurn, senior, is the daughter of Joseph and Joanne McGurn of Traverse City. She is a 2005 graduate of Traverse City West Senior High School.

-- Jamie L. Chapman of Traverse City has enrolled as a member of the class of 2012 at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. She is the daughter of Randy Chapman and Dana Allen.
