-- The following local students were named winners of the Reading Rainbow "Young Writers and Illustrators Contest" at WCMU. First place: Therese Wisniewski of Gaylord, Elliott Wilson of Bellaire and Gavin Bebb of Traverse City. Second place: Lauren Gietzen of Petoskey. Third place: Caeley S. Terwilliger of South Boardman and Genevieve Kromm of Petoskey.
-- Traverse City East Middle School's Isabelle Sutherland received top honors in The America and Me Essay Contest sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance. Second place went to Nonie Tompkins, and Alex Gill received third place. Traverse City West Middle School had three winners: First place Andrew Jones, second place Savannah Buist, and third place Hannah Yancho. Sutherland and Jones will have their essays in the statewide competition.
-- Steven Johnson of Rockford, Ill., a senior at Interlochen Arts Academy, has been named a National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts youngARTS Presidential Scholar in the Arts by the U.S. Department of Education and The Commission on Presidential Scholars. Winners will be honored at a White House ceremony.
-- Stephen Wood of Traverse City is among 45 Western Michigan University students honored for achievement this spring by the Department of Foreign Languages. Wood was the recipient of the Prix de l'Alliance Française, an award given to a student who demonstrates exemplary student involvement in French activities.
-- Tara Mulder, a 2005 graduate of Traverse City West Senior High School, graduated with honors from the University of Michigan with a bachelor's degree in Classical Languages and Literature. She was also awarded the Seligson Prize for the most exceptional undergraduate Classical Greek concentrator and the Arthur Miller Creative Arts Award for her excellence in humanities. Tara will pursue her doctorate in Classics at Brown University.
-- Best Buy has awarded one @15 scholarship to Margaret Liederbach, a recent graduate of Petoskey High School and daughter of Fred and Kathy Liederbach. Margaret plans to attend Loyola University of New Orleans in the fall.
-- Tyler Putnam of Traverse City recently graduated with honors from Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio.
-- Jodi Janelle Boldra of Traverse City recently received her master's degree from Pittsburgh State University.
-- A team of students from Glen Lake High School took third place at the Michigan Envirothon state competition at Michigan State University. Team "Strike Package Bravo" included Nadine Gilmer, Will Hendricks, Ashley Leach, John Lee and Maura Niemisto.
-- Lillian Elizabeth Prentice of Traverse City was awarded the Nellie C. Watterson Fellowship in the Creative and Performing Arts from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.
