Two dead following apparent accident

PETOSKEY — Authorities say two Petoskey men died following an apparent canoeing accident on Lake Michigan's Little Traverse Bay.

The Petoskey News-Review and WWTV-WWUP report that 28-year-old Nicholas Lightfoot and 27-year-old Nathaniel Denay were found early Monday on the north side of Little Traverse Bay following a night of searching.

The men were found by Coast Guard crews and attempts to resuscitate them were unsuccessful. Department of Public Safety Director John Calabrese said both men were wearing wetsuits and life jackets.

Police say the men told family members they were going canoeing Sunday afternoon. The search began Sunday night after family members called police to say the men didn't return as expected.

A local farmer and Emmet County commissioner was killed in a truck accident.

Four dead in four-vehicle crash

Daniel Firman, 25, and brothers Christian Hunley, 17, and Aaron Hunley, 16, all from Gaylord, died Thursday in a four-vehicle crash near Petoskey. They were members of Grace Baptist Church in Gaylord, where Sunday's services are expected to be emotional. Andrew Erickson, 17, of Elmira, died Friday from crash-related injuries.

Teens allegedly 'shined' and shot deer

Two Emmet County teens face criminal charges after they allegedly "shined" and shot several white-tailed deer. Joshua Luke Kruzel, 17, and another male youth, 16, recently were arrested and charged with deer poaching and several related misdemeanors.

Festival turns northern Michigan into Narnia

In November, northern Michigan becomes Narnia. The sixth annual C.S. Lewis Festival features about 20 events from Nov. 5-25 in the Petoskey, Harbor Springs and Charlevoix areas. Happenings include pub nights, lectures, a musical and a student writing program. The Lewis-centric festival honors and explores the contributions of the writer and theologian.

Kid ready to rock at sold-out Boyne show

Kid Rock recalls days in northern Michigan spent catching walleye off a dock and sipping whiskey from a bottle. Or, at least that's how his hit sing-along anthem "All Summer Long" tells it.
