Federal grant awarded to Petoskey hospital

PETOSKEY -- Northern Michigan Hospitals, Inc. in Petoskey received a federal grant to develop a rural health network.

The hospital received an $84,950 grant to establish a primary care model that creates care solutions in rural and remote areas. A proposed alliance would bring together Northern Michigan Regional Hospital in Petoskey, Charlevoix Area Hospital, Cheboygan Memorial Hospital, Mackinac Straits Hospital and Health Center in St. Ignace and Beaver Island Rural Health Center to maximize resources.

The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Rural Health Network Development Planning Grant Program. The program's goal is to strengthen rural health care delivery systems with funds typically used to acquire staff, contract with technical experts and purchase resources.

Four dead in four-vehicle crash

Daniel Firman, 25, and brothers Christian Hunley, 17, and Aaron Hunley, 16, all from Gaylord, died Thursday in a four-vehicle crash near Petoskey. They were members of Grace Baptist Church in Gaylord, where Sunday's services are expected to be emotional. Andrew Erickson, 17, of Elmira, died Friday from crash-related injuries.

Goalie now trying to save lives

Teens allegedly 'shined' and shot deer

Two Emmet County teens face criminal charges after they allegedly "shined" and shot several white-tailed deer. Joshua Luke Kruzel, 17, and another male youth, 16, recently were arrested and charged with deer poaching and several related misdemeanors.

Festival turns northern Michigan into Narnia

In November, northern Michigan becomes Narnia. The sixth annual C.S. Lewis Festival features about 20 events from Nov. 5-25 in the Petoskey, Harbor Springs and Charlevoix areas. Kid ready to rock at sold-out Boyne show

Kid Rock recalls days in northern Michigan spent catching walleye off a dock and sipping whiskey from a bottle. Or, at least that's how his hit sing-along anthem "All Summer Long" tells it. Saturday, the rocker returns to the region that inspired the tune when he performs to a teeming crowd at Boyne Mountain in Boyne Falls.
