Basketball Roundup: Ramblers win regional

INDIAN RIVER -- McBain avenged last year's regional ouster at the hands of Charlevoix by handing the Rayders a 53-47 Class C regional final setback on Thursday.

"It was one or two points most of the game," Ramblers coach Todd Hamlet said. "We got it up to nine in the fourth quarter and hung on."

McBain led by three after both the first quarter and halftime. Charlevoix trailed by two heading into the final stanza.

"We knew we were going to get a tough game from Charlevoix," Hamlet said. "They played very physical and I thought our girls did a good job handling it."

Annemarie Hamlet led McBain with 20 points, six steals and five assists.

Jamie Geeseman and Elizabeth Hamlet each had double-doubles. Geeseman chipped in 13 points and 12 boards, while Elizabeth Hamlet added 10 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and seven blocks.

Erica Faust and Meridith Rich led Charlevoix with 11 points each.

The Ramblers -- who lost to Charlevoix in last year's regional semifinal -- play fellow 24-1 squad Houghton in Tuesday's quarterfinal at Petoskey. Houghton defeated St. Ignace 69-58 Thursday.

It marks the first time McBain has advanced out of regionals since going to the state semifinals in 1994.

BOYS HOOPS

Marquette 76
TC West 42

Marquette topped Traverse City West 76-42 in their boys Class A district semifinal.

The game -- postponed due to a Mackinac Bridge closure on Wednesday -- puts the Redmen into Saturday's district final against Gaylord at the Blue Devils' home gym at 3 p.m.

Joe SImono led Marquette with 26 points and Tyler Gary and Eric Powers added 13 each.

John Purdy's nine points led the Titans (11-9). Mike Rosenberg had eight for West.

"I thought overall we took some positive steps this season and some guys really improved," Titans coach Brett Graham said. "The kids played hard for the most part and you hate to end the season like this, but there's some positives to draw on."
