TRAVERSE CITY -- The winner of this year's Record-Eagle Oscar contest hasn't seen a single nominated film.
None.
That's going to change next year, said Marsha Jurgensen, 63, of Traverse City. Now that she has an all-access pass to the State Theatre in Traverse City, she'll "make time" to go to the movies.
"We've just been so busy with the grandkids," she said.
She "just kind of guessed" at the winners and listened to people talk, she said. She chose "The Hurt Locker" as Best Picture because "it had so much meaning to it. People need meaning right now. It's been so political lately."
The picks that put her over the top were two tiebreaker questions. Jurgensen picked "The New Tenants" as Best Live Action Short Film and guessed that Penelope Cruz would wear a red dress to the ceremonies.
-- Second-place winner Lisa Rollin of Onekama won a pass for two to each movie shown at the Garden Theater in Frankfort for the rest of the year.
- Third-place winner Holly MacAuley of Grawn gets 10 passes for two to Carmike Cinemas.
- Fourth-place winner Joe Manguno of Interlochen gets a 20-week, seven-day subscription to the Record-Eagle.
-- Fifth-place winner Judith Brower of Traverse City gets four passes for two, plus popcorn and pop, at the Bay Theatre in Suttons Bay.
-- Sixth-place winner Connie Leutloff of Traverse City receives two movie passes to the Garden Theatre and dinner for two at Dinghy's in Frankfort.
