Local artist selected for statewide show

TRAVERSE CITY -- Artwork by Robert J. Morey, of Traverse City, will be in a statewide show.

Morey's collage -- featuring faces and eyes -- will be one of 35 pieces in "Creative Minds Changing Minds," a traveling art show sponsored by the Michigan Association of Community Mental Health Boards.

Morey won $100.

The goals of the show are to help destigmatize mental illness, developmental disabilities and substance use issues. The show also hopes to show the power of the arts in recovery.

The show launches in Dearborn in May and will continue around the state through 2012. At the end of the two years, the artwork will be auctioned off, with proceeds going to increase awareness of mental illness and developmental disabilities.

Three judges from Cadillac chose Morey's artwork to represent the Northern Lakes Community Mental Health service area. The judges described Morey's piece as "a fascinating emotion-filled work, with inquiring eyes that draw the viewer in -- seeing, searching, looking back."

Organizations interested in hosting the traveling exhibition can call 935-3099.
