Free books for kids at Father Fred sale

Traverse City — The Father Fred Foundation is teaming up with the Bank of Northern Michigan to encourage summer reading by giving preschool and school-age children two free books when they visit the Father Fred Summer Book Sale.

The sale will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, July 30, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 31, at the Grand Traverse Heritage Center, 322 Sixth St.

More than 8,000 titles for readers of all ages, plus CDs and DVDs, will be available.

Proceeds go toward the Foundation's food and financial assistance programs.

Strong Tower Radio hosts gospel concert

Cadillac — Strong Tower Radio will host a concert by the Jackpine Pickers.

The group will perform country gospel and bluegrass music at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 31, at the Rotary Performing Arts Pavilion on Lake Cadillac. In case of rain, the concert will be at the Cadillac SDA, 801 E. Division.

Admission is free, but an offering will be collected to benefit the ministries of Strong Tower Radio. Listeners should bring their own seating.

Christian musician will give concerts

Empire — Christian musician Marty Miller will give two concerts in the Grand Traverse area.

Miller is a contemporary Christian artist who combines original music with a blend of well-known songs and worship music.

Miller will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 31, at Empire United Methodist Church, 10050 Michigan St. An offering will be collected. A potluck dinner will begin at 6 p.m.

Miller also will give a concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, at Old Mission Peninsula United Methodist Church, 16426 Center Road. A donation will be accepted. For details, call 223-4393.

Summer Church hosts guest speaker

Leland — Leland Summer Church will continue its 55-year tradition of hosting well-known speakers from the Midwest.

Dr. Norman M. Pritchard will address the congregation at the 9:30 a.m. Summer Church service Sunday, Aug. 1, at Leland Community United Methodist Church, 106 N. Fourth St. Drive.

Pritchard is senior pastor and head of staff at Kirk in the Hills Presbyterian Church, Bloomfield.

Leland Summer Church will continue on Sundays through Aug. 29.

Blessing of the Animals for pets

Traverse City — Pet owners are invited to bring their animal friends on leashes or in travel cages to a Blessing of the Animals at Traverse Bay United Methodist Church.

A short service will start at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, on the front lawn at the church, 1200 Ramsdell Road, followed by individual blessings for the animals. In case of rain, the event will be held at the same time Sunday, Aug. 8.

Public invited to strawberry social

Lake Ann — The community is invited to enjoy strawberry shortcake in exchange for a free-will donation to support missions and outreach.

The Strawberry Shortcake Social will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, at the Almira Township Hall. It is sponsored by Woodside Wesleyan Church.

VBS will travel to ancient Egypt

Interlochen — Interlochen Bible Church invites children in kindergarten through sixth grade to Vacation Bible School.

Classes will meet from 6 to 8:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Aug. 2-6, at the church, 2995 M-137. The theme is "The Egypt File."

Parents can register their children from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at the church. Registrations also will be taken during VBS.
