Rainbow Bookstore hosts open house

Traverse City -- Rainbow Bookstore invites customers and friends to say good-bye to its sales counselor and curriculum manager Linette Martin.

Martin started work at the store in November 1998 and will be leaving to attend Baker College in Cadillac. The open house will be held from noon to 2 p.m. today at the bookstore, 1253 S. Airport Road West.

'Hands Around the School' is Sunday

Traverse City -- Northern Lakes Community Church, a Presbyterian congregation, will sponsor the seventh annual "Hands Around The School."

The event, a response to the Columbine school shootings, invites people of all faiths to ask God to provide safety and success to all students, faculty and staff who will enter a particular school during the coming year.

"Hands Around the School" will begin at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday on the westside sidewalk leading to the main entrance at Traverse City West Senior High School, 5376 N. Long Lake Road. Participants should feel free to pray for other schools, the students and all adults who care for them.

Congregation will broadcast messages

Benzonia -- The Fresh Wind Christian Community has arranged to have its weekly messages broadcast on the radio starting on Sunday.

The relatively new, non-denominational church worships in the auditorium at Benzie Central High School on Homestead Road. The congregation is led by the Rev. Chuck Towersey.

The weekly message may be heard from 7:30 to 8 a.m. Sundays on WFCX 94.3 FM "The Fox," a classic rock station with coverage in Benzie, Manistee, Wexford, Leelanau, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Antrim counties.

Program outlines trip to Passion Play

Traverse City -- Once every decade the people of Oberammergau, Germany, present their "Passion Play." First Christian Church will host a program on this historic event and discuss plans for trips to Germany in 2010 to experience the play.

'Journey Through Grief' support group

Traverse City -- Kathryn Holl from Hospice of Michigan will facilitate a five-week grief support group starting on Tuesday.

"Journey Through Grief" will meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Oct. 13 at Grace Episcopal Church, 341 Washington St. It is designed to provide a safe and supportive place for participants to express their thoughts and feelings and increase their awareness of the grief process.

Church dinner will celebrate harvest

Mancelona -- The Mancelona United Methodist Church will celebrate autumn with its annual Harvest Dinner.

The family-style roast beef meal will be served on Tuesday at the church, 117 E. Hinman. Seatings will be at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m., with take-outs sold at 5 and 6 p.m.

Class helps people gain financial peace

Traverse City -- Bible Baptist Church will offer the 13-week Financial Peace University beginning on Tuesday.

The DVD program is taught by Dave Ramsey, who started teaching classes in 1994 around Nashville, Tenn. In 1997, the program was made available on video.

Classes will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the church, 1915 Cass Road. Each participant needs a kit and special rates are routinely available at www.daveramsey.com or by calling (888) 227-3223. The kit price includes a lifetime family membership to FPU, a workbook and envelope system, 13 audio lessons, a bonus CD, budgeting forms, debit card holders and Ramsey's book "Financial Peace."

TC Christian Schools host Fall Festival

Traverse City -- Traverse City Christian Schools invite the community to its Fall Festival.

The event will begin with a tailgate dinner from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the TCCS elementary school, 1514 Birmley Road. Contemporary Christian music will be performed from 7:45 to 8;15 p.m. by the school band and 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. by Psalm 21 Band.

Participants should bring their own meal. Some grill space will be available. A beverage and dessert concession also will be available, with proceeds benefitting student scholarships.

Author to speak on 'Beyond Tolerance'

Northport -- Gustav Niebuhr will be the speaker at the fifth annual Belko Peace Lectures and also will sign copies of his books in Traverse City and Northport.

Niebuhr is director of the Religion and Society Program and also founding director of the Carnegie Religion and Media Program, both at Syracuse University. He has worked as a journalist for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and also has been a frequent contributor to National Public Radio. In his most recent book, "Beyond Tolerance," Niebuhr honors the commitment and care shown by those working on the front lines of interreligious understanding.

Niebuhr's first lecture, "Beyond Tolerance: Building Bridges of Religious Understanding in a Violent Time," will start at 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at Trinity Church (United Church of Christ), 103 N. Warren. His second lecture, "Making Peace Is Hard Work," will be part of the 11 a.m. worship service on Sept. 20 at the church. There is no charge and the public is welcome.

Neibuhr also will sign his books from 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday at Horizon Books, 243 E. Front St., Traverse City; and 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 19 at Dog Ears Books, 106 Waukazoo St., Northtport.

Grand Rapids group plays for fall dance

Maple City -- The St. Rita/St. Joseph Men's Club will host a Fall Dance featuring music by The Diddle Styx from Grand Rapids.

The dance will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight on Sept. 19 at the parish hall, 9243 County Road 667. The doors will open at 7:30 p.m. A $10 donation per person is requested and profits will benefit the education department.

Church will offer Grief Share program

Traverse City -- Anyone grieving the loss of a loved one is welcome to join the Grief Share program at Bay Pointe Community Church.

The program will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for 12 Wednesdays starting Sept. 23 at the church, 6880 Secor Road. Different topics are discussed each week and participants may join any time.
