to order apple pies
Kingsley -- St. Mary Hannah Parish will be making 1,000 apple pies on Oct. 23, but today is the last day to place an order.
Pie making will begin at 8 a.m. and pies must be picked up between 2 and 6 p.m. on Oct. 23 at St. Mary Hannah School, 2912 W. M-113. The unbaked pies are $7 each and ready to go in the oven or freezer.

Worship gatherings at 'The Well' planned
Traverse City -- Following the successful launch of "The Well" in September, Central United Methodist Church is planning a second pair of worship gatherings.
Worship at "The Well" will be offered at 9 a.m. Sunday and at 7 p.m. Thursday in the church chapel, 222 Cass St. The theme is "Will We Make It." For details, call 946-5191.
Bishop Gumbleton will visit Charlevoix
Charlevoix -- Bishop Thomas Gumbleton of the Archdiocese of Detroit will discuss present conditions in Haiti and Iraq on Tuesday at the Charlevoix United Methodist Church.
Bishop Gumbleton is a leading voice for peace, justice and civil rights, He is one of the authors of the 1983 Pastoral Letter "The Challenge of Peace," and a founding member of Pax Christi. He remains one of the organization's Ambassadors for Peace. He has traveled throughout the world calling for the end to war and the abolition of nuclear weapons and has visited Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Vietnam, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Palestine, Colombia, Haiti and Peru.
The program will start at 7:30 p.m. at the church, 104 State St., and will be followed by a reception honoring Bishop Gumbleton. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. For more information, call 536-7018.
Public invited to Halloween Dance
Maple City -- The Watkoski Family Band from Grand Rapids will play at a Halloween Dance sponsored by the St. Rita/St. Joseph Men's Club.
The dance will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight Oct. 24 at the St. Rita/St. Joseph Parish Hall, 9243 County Road 667. The doors will open at 7:30 p.m.
A donation of $10 per person is suggested and profits benefit the education department.
Methodist Men serve fish dinner
Kalkaska -- The Kalkaska United Methodist Men will host a fish fry Oct. 24.
The catfish meal will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Kalkaska United Methodist Church, 2525 Beebe Road. The cost is $8 for adults, $5 for children ages 5 and younger and $25 for families. Call 258-2820.
Gladhander raffle tickets available
Traverse City -- Tickets still are available for a chance to win a 2010 BMW 1 Series, a 2010 Cadillac CTS or $32,000 in cash in the Gladhander raffle.
Tickets are $125 each or two for $200. In addition to the grand prize, there will be nine drawings for $500 prizes, and four drawings for $1,000 prizes. The drawings will be held at 11 p.m. on Oct. 24 at the Gladhander fundraiser for Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools and ticket holders need not be present to win.

Church invites kids to 'trunk and treat'
Traverse City -- Members of the congregation at West Bay Covenant Church will gather their cars in the church parking lot for a night of "Trunk and Treat."
Children can go from vehicle to vehicle from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 25 to trick or treat in a safe environment at the church, M-22 and Cherry Bend Road. Food also will be served.

Reservations for women's gathering
Traverse City -- Reservations are being accepted for the "Women of Influence" Gathering on Nov. 7. Arlene Yoder will be the keynote speaker.
Yoder is an international minister who has worked in the United States, Latin America, England, Wales and Australia for the past 30 years. She currently is living in Grand Rapids before returning to Latin America to work in the country of Panama.
The event will focus on the theme "Empowering Women to Fulfill Their God-given Purpose" and will be held at La Senorita, 1245 S. Garfield. The day includes fellowship from 9:30 to 10 a.m., Yoder's program from 10 a.m. to noon, lunch and fellowship from noon to 1 p.m., and individual ministry and prophetic word from 1 to 2 p.m. The cost for lunch is $10.

Manton food pantry receives grant
MANTON -- The Manton Free Methodist Gleaners Food Pantry has received a grant from the Manton Area Rotary Club Fund, a fund within the Cadillac Area Community Foundation.
The funds total $990 and will be used to help support the efforts of the food pantry in supplying grocery and household items to Manton residents.
Residents of the Manton School District in need of help, or anyone interested in helping with the program should call 879-4307.
